SATURDAY, DECEMBER 14

No. 11 Nebraska at Oregon State; Gill Coliseum; 1 p.m.

Oregon State's wrestlers may get final exams over with by Friday afternoon, but they'll continue to be tested well into the weekend.

The Beavers (0-0 overall duals, 0-0 Pacific-10 duals) get into dual meet competition when OSU travels to Oregon (0-0, 0-0) for a Civil War matchup on Friday night and then hosts 11th-ranked Nebraska (1-0, 0-0) on Saturday afternoon.

'These will be two very good meets,' OSU head coach Joe Wells said. 'First, on a Friday the 13th, we get to go down and wrestle the Ducks for bragging rights for two months, and we're looking forward to it. We're fired up. Go to Mac Court, shake hands and get after it.'

OSU and Oregon have usually had a look at one another in both the Southern Oregon Open and Las Vegas Invitational by the time they meet in their December dual, but Oregon's schedule this winter didn't include either tournament.

'We're pretty familiar with each other, anyway,' Wells said. 'Everybody knows everybody, basically; they've all gone to high school together.'

The Civil War dual provides a great matchup at heavyweight, where Oregon State senior Andy Bowlby is ranked 10th nationally by Amateur Wrestling News and 11th by InterMat. Bowlby pinned three nationally-ranked opponents last week en route to fifth place at the prestigious Las Vegas Invitational.

Oregon counters with Eric Webb, who is ranked 12th by AWN and eighth by IM. Webb is ranked second in the Pac-10, while Bowlby is ranked fourth.

The Ducks have two other nationally-ranked wrestlers. At 149 pounds, Tony Overstake is ranked 19th by IM; at 174 pounds, Shane Webster is ranked ninth by AWN and seventh by IM.

Nebraska, which will wrestle at Portland State on Friday night, comes to Gill Coliseum with six nationally-ranked wrestlers. At 125 pounds, Jason Powell is ranked fourth by AWN and third by IM; at 149, Travis Shufelt is ranked ninth by AWN and 14th by IM; at 165, Jacob Klein is ranked 18th by IM; at 174, Travis Pascoe is ranked 13th by AWN and 14th by IM; at 184, B.J. Paden is ranked sixth by AWN and eighth by IM; at 197, Justin Ruiz is ranked first by AWN and third by IM.

'That's a good, solid group,' Wells said of the Cornhuskers, who placed sixth in the 50-team Las Vegas Invitational last weekend. 'They had a number of kids place, and it's going to make for a good meet.'

Oregon State will have challenge matches during the week to determine a number of starters.

'These are both good tests for us as we finish the first half of the season,' Wells said. 'They'll give us a lot to look at. We haven't had a lot of matches so far, but we've got a lot of competition coming up right after the Christmas break. This weekend will give all our guys an opportunity to wrestle some people who are ranked in their weight class.'

A historical footnote - this is the latest dual opener for OSU since the 1990-91 season, when the Beavers wrestled Western Oregon on Dec. 13.

OREGON STATE ALL-TIME VS. THIS WEEK'S OPPONENTS: Oregon State has an all-time record of 96-23-4 against Oregon in a series dating back to 1915. Last season, the teams split their dual meets, as OSU won 16-16 on criteria in Corvallis; then Oregon won 18-14 in Eugene. The Beavers' last win in Eugene came in 2000 by a 24-13 score.

Oregon State has an all-time record of 2-4 against Nebraska in a series dating back to 1973. The Cornhuskers have won the last 4 meets in the series, including 22-16 last season in Lincoln. This will be the first time the teams have met in Corvallis.

LAST WEEK: Oregon State heavyweight Andy Bowlby pinned 3 nationally-ranked opponents en route to fifth place Dec. 6-7 in the Las Vegas Invitational wrestling tournament. The Beavers finished 18th in the 50-team field.

Then-No. 1-ranked Minnesota was the team champion, followed by ninth-ranked Illinois, sixth-ranked Ohio State, 12th-ranked Arizona State and 10th-ranked West Virginia.

OSU had just 3 wrestlers win matches in the championship bracket, quickly putting most of the Beavers in loser-out matches in the wrestle-backs. But Oregon State came back to have 4 of its wrestlers (Bowlby, 149-pounder Tony Hook, 174-pounder Jake Huffman and 184-pounder Dan Pitsch) finish the tournament with winning records and 2 more (133-pounder Tim Norman and 165-pounder Matt Ellis) finish at .500 for the tournament.

'As we wrestled in the tournament, we started to loosen up and get better,' OSU head coach Joe Wells said.

Bowlby, ranked 11th nationally by Amateur Wrestling News, had advanced to the championship quarterfinals before losing. He came back to pin 15th-ranked Greg Wagner of Michigan in 1 minute, 30 seconds and 20th-ranked Brad Steele of Wyoming in 1:58 in his first 2 wrestleback matches.

Bowlby was then edged by defending NCAA champion and No. 1-ranked Tommy Rowlands of Ohio State 3-2; Rowlands had been beaten 2-2 in a tiebreaker by Arizona State's Kellan Fluckiger in the semifinals. Bowlby rebounded to pin 20th-ranked Brent Miller of West Virginia in 29 seconds in the fifth-place final.

OSU hadn't fared as well against ranked wrestlers at the upper weights on the opening day, with that partially leading to the Beavers' presence in the wrestlebacks. Ellis, Pitsch and Lovell were all bounced in their first matches by wrestlers ranked sixth or higher at their weight and Huffman's opening-round loss was also to a nationally-ranked opponent.

'We've got some new names in our lineup, and they've got to verify what they can do,' Wells said. 'They got some tough draws, but that's part of the sport. You've just got to come back and wrestle hard and go for third place (by winning the wrestleback bracket).'

The Beavers were wrestling for just the second time this season, having taken a week off from competition after the Southern Oregon Open on Nov. 23; OSU usually wrestles at least one dual meet between that tournament and the Las Vegas Invitational.

'We haven't wrestled many matches this year,' Wells said. 'But that's not an excuse. It's just early in the season and we've got to get after it and work on a few things we recognized throughout the tournament.

'It boils down to going out and competing and figuring out how to win a match. It just comes back to the execution of the basics.'

OREGON STATE HEAD COACH JOE WELLS: Joe Wells, now in his 11th season as Oregon State's head coach, has led the Beavers to a Pacific-10 title and 4 top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships.

The Beavers' 25-10 win over then-No. 11 Boise State in 2001 was Wells' 100th dual meet win at OSU. Since taking over the Beaver program prior to the 1992-93 season, Wells is 115-69-1 for a winning percentage of .624.

The Beavers were Pacific-10 Conference champions under Wells in 1994 and he has twice been named the conference's Coach of the Year. OSU has finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships 4 times in Wells' tenure, placing second in 1995, fourth in 1994, eighth in 1996 and tying for ninth in 1998.

Under Wells, OSU has had 2 national champions, 17 All-Americans and 21 conference champions.

Wells was named the ASICS Oregon Wrestling Classic's Man of the Year for 1998 for his contributions to wrestling in the state.

Wells, who has coached numerous World Teams for the United States, is a 1972 Iowa graduate. He was a 2-time placer at the Big Ten meet and was the 1976 U.S. Wrestling Federation freestyle champ. He spent 17 seasons as an assistant coach at Iowa and Michigan before coming to Oregon State.

OREGON STATE SECOND IN ALL-TIME DUAL MEET WINS: OSU rates as one of the best dual meet teams in collegiate wrestling history. The Beavers were second in all-time dual meet wins among Division I schools and fourth in all-time dual meet winning percentage going into the 2002-03 season. Going into the 2003 season, OSU has an all-time dual meet record of 849-261-24 and a .759 winning percentage.

OREGON STATE'S DUAL MEET SCHEDULE: OSU will face one of the nation's toughest dual meet schedules. The Beavers meet 6 teams ranked in the current National Wrestling Coaches Association poll: No. 1 Oklahoma State, No. 4 Oklahoma, No. 7 Arizona State, No. 11 Nebraska, No. 15 Central Michigan and No. 21 Central Michigan.

OREGON STATE IN GILL COLISEUM: Oregon State has one of the finest homes in college wrestling, 10,400-seat Gill Coliseum. Now in their 47th season in Gill Coliseum, the Beavers have a home dual meet record of 352-65-5 in the arena.

OSU moved its home wrestling meets into Gill Coliseum in 1956-57, when Dale Thomas became head coach. Since then, the arena has hosted conference championship meets 14 times, including 2002, and it was the site of the NCAA Championships in 1961 and 1980.
