Oregon Wrestling Falls to No. 12 Nebraska
Dec. 14, 2002
EUGENE - One night after defeating rival Oregon State, the Oregon wrestling team was unable to pull off the upset against No. 12 Nebraska. The Cornhuskers (4-0) defeated the Ducks (1-1, 1-0), 30-3, at McArthur Court in front of a crowd of 648.
'Tonight we went out a little bit flat,' head coach Chuck Kearney said. '[Nebraska] showed up here with a purpose and on a mission.'
The Cornhuskers avenged last season's loss to the Ducks in Nebraska, winning all but one match this time around. Junior Jake Leair won a 7-1 decision against Kyle Gubbels at 197 to score Oregon's only points.
'Our guys wrestled hard, they just didn't get it done,' Kearney said.
In a highly-anticipated match at 174, No. 13-ranked Travis Pascoe knocked off previously unbeaten Shane Webster of Oregon, 5-2. Webster, the No. 7-ranked wrestler in the country coming into the match, had beaten Pascoe two weeks ago at the Mat-Town USA Invitational, 12-8.
Senior Casey Hunt came close to defeating Matt Murray at 141, but Murray won a narrow decision, 4-3. Hunt tied the match up with a takedown with less than a minute remaining, but Murray scored one point with an escape to seal the match.
The wrestling team will head to Reno, Nev., Thursday to take part in the Reno Tournament of Champions. Several ranked teams will be participating at the one-day event. The Ducks' next dual meet will take place at Michigan, Jan. 4.
