No. 23 Arizona Women's Basketball Drops New Mexico, 70-61
Dec. 18, 2002
Tucson, Ariz. (Dec. 18) - Freshman center Shawntinice Polk snagged her seventh consecutive double-double while leading the University of Arizona women's basketball team to a 70-61 win at home over New Mexico on Wednesday. The Cats moved to 5-2 on the year, while the Lobos saw their win streak end at eight and slipped to 8-1.
Arizona opened the game with a 13-5 spurt over the first five minutes, but UNM responded with eight unanswered points to tie the score at 13-13 with 10:59 left in the first. The Cats used a 13-3 run to gain a 10-point (26-16) advantage at 5:04 and led by a score of 35-27 at halftime.
New Mexico began the second half with its own 13-5 spurt to tie the game at 40-40 just six minutes into the period, but the Wildcats never trailed. At 11:21, they began a 25-10 run that gave them a 15-point (69-54) lead, their largest of the game, with 1:09 to play. Polk got eight of her 14 second-half points during that Wildcat run.
The Lobos out-scored the Cats, 7-1, down the stretch but were unable to get any closer than the final spread of nine.
'I think we played a pretty good first half defensively. I knew after the first half that New Mexico was going to focus on going into Jordan Adams and crashing the boards, and we did a good job dealing with both,' said head coach Joan Bonvicini. 'I'm proud of how our team played tonight. This was a great game for us, and New Mexico is a great team. I'm proud of how our team was able to bounce back after being down.'
Polk finished with game highs of 26 points and 11 rebounds, to go with a trio of assists. Junior guard Aimee Grzyb had 13 points and four rebounds, while senior forward Krista Warren added 12 points, six rebounds and three steals. Freshman guard Natalie Jones had seven points and three rebounds.
New Mexico was paced by Jordan Adams' 17 points, including 13 in the second half, and five rebounds. Guard Mandi Moore drained four 3-pointers on her way to 16 points, seven rebounds and a game-high seven assists. Chelsea Grear added 10 points and five rebounds.
The Wildcats will begin a three-game road swing this weekend with a contest at UNLV on Sunday, Dec. 22, at 5 p.m. PST. After Christmas, they will begin Pac-10 play at California on Dec. 27 and at Stanford on Dec. 29.
