Women's Basketball Defeats Kent State, 64-48

KENT, Ohio - The Kent State University women's basketball team (3-5) made only 12field goals and Arizona State University (7-1) went on a 27-11 run the last9:31 to break open a tie game and defeat the Golden Flashes 64-48 Dec. 18. The loss snapped Kent State's two-game winning streak and was its first loss at home in nine games.

Both teams started cold as it was 8-6 ASU as late as 11:43 of the firsthalf. Kent State went 15-of-16 from the free-throw line in the openingframe and it kept them withing striking distance, despite only connectingon 2-of-17 shots from the field. The Golden Flashes led by as many as fourin the first half at 14-10 with 6:11 left, but ASU went on a 13-0 run inthe next four minutes and took a 24-19 lead into the break. Amy Denson hadseven points in the opening frame for the Sun Devils.

With Arizona State up 37-31 at 11:17, Kent State went on 6-0 run on alayup by freshman Lindsay Shearer (East Canton, Ohio/Minerva) and twojumpers by freshman Kacie Vavrek (Bellaire, Ohio/Bellaire). But a 14-2spurt on the strength of six points by Denson and freshman Jill Noeextended the Sun Devils lead to 12 and they would never look back.

Kent State was led by senior Jamie Rubis (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover)with 12 points. Senior Valerie Zona (Cranberry, Pa./Seneca Valley) chippedin with 11 and Vavrek added 10. Denson and Noe led the Sun Devils with 17points each and Kylan Loney added 15. Kristen Kovesdy had a double-doublefor Arizona State with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Kent State ended the game shooting 12-of-40 (.300) and wereout-rebounded 43-20. The Sun Devils had 18 second-chance points, comparedto zero for the Golden Flashes. Kent State did go 23-of-24 from the lineto raise its season percentage to .797.
