Arizona Gymnastics Solid in Second Intra-Squad Scrimmage
Dec. 20, 2002
Tucson, Ariz. (Dec. 20) - The University of Arizona women's gymnastics team held its last intra-squad scrimmage of the winter on Friday, Dec. 20, before the start of the 2003 season.
The Wildcats were split into two different squads and competed against each other on uneven bars and on floor exercise. Each gymnast was given a simulated competition score and was judged according to NCAA competition regulations.
'The floor intra-squad was pretty good, which is what I expect from a good floor team,' Head Coach Bill Ryden said. 'On bars we definitely need to work. Dismounts were good, which was nice since most are E difficulty. Most of the deductions were minor execution errors, which can add up quickly.'
For the Wildcats, senior Nikki Beyschau posted a team-high bar score of 9.850. Sophomore Monica Bisordi posted a bar score of 9.825 and sophomore Jamie Duce added a bar score of 9.800. Junior Sheehan Lemley scored 9.775 on bars and sophomore Stevie Fanning grabbed a 9.700 mark on bars.
'Nikki Beyschau has definitely shown not only quality (on bars), but consistent quality which is what I am looking for from everyone,' Ryden said.
Leading to way for Arizona on floor, sophomore Jamie Schell posted a score of 9.875, which was her season-high floor mark from 2002. Stevie Fanning and Monica Bisordi each posted floor marks of 9.800 respectively. Sophomore Kristine Harper posted a floor score of 9.750 and Sheehan Lemley finished with a floor mark of 9.725.
Junior Andi McCabe performed one of the most difficult collegiate floor routines in the intra-squad. In her routine, McCabe mounted with a pike full-in, came back with a whip to double pike, and then performed a double-tuck on her last pass before sticking the landing. McCabe finished with a score of 9.750 on floor. Last season, Arizona finished the regular season ranked No. 12 in the nation on floor.
'We have a ways to go making all the dance exact and sticking and staying in bounds on tumbling,' Ryden said. 'Jamie Schell had a really nice routine to win the event. It was nice to see Monica Bisordi, Stevie Fanning, Katie Johnson and Andi McCabe in that 9.8 range and to have so many above 9.65 bodes well.'
Arizona will open the 2003 season in Minneapolis, Minn., on Jan. 11, when the Wildcats take on the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
