Stanford is heading back to the bright lights of Las Vegas ... Last year, the Cardinal played in the Las Vegas Shootout against Brigham Young ... The Cardinal now makes a return trip of Nevada to face the Runnin' Rebels of UNLV ... This will be Stanford's first road trip of the year after playing seven games at Maples Pavilion and two games on a neutral court (Madison Square Garden) in the Pre-Season BIT ... The Cardinal is currently 6-3, with two of those wins over nationally-ranked teams ... On Nov. 20, the Cardinal scored a 63-62 victory over then eleventh-ranked Xavier in the second round of the Pre-Season NIT, and then followed up with a 69-65 decision over then seventh-ranked Florida (11/27/02) in the semi-finals of the NIT at Madison Square Garden.
Stanford is in the midst of its 88th season of collegiate basketball competition ... The Cardinal returns nine players from a squad that produced a 20-10 record, a second place finish in the Pac-10 Conference, and a school record eighth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament ... One starter returns, Julius Barnes ... Justin Davis started 18 games last year, and has started all nine games this year ... Two other starters from a year ago, Curtis Borchardt and Casey Jacobsen, left Stanford after their junior seasons to join the NBA ... Borchardt plays for the Utah Jazz, but is currently injured with a broken foot, while Jacobsen plays for the Phoenix Suns ... Jacobsen led the Pac-10 in scoring (21.9 ppg) last year, while Borchardt led the league in rebounding (11.4 rpg) ... It was the first time in Pac-10 history that two different players from the same school led the league in scoring and rebounding ... Chris Hernandez, who was projected as Stanford's starting point-guard, will miss the rest of the season ... Hernandez had broken a bone in his left foot on Oct. 26 and had returned to action against St. Mary's on Dec. 14 ... But two nights later against Montana in the Stanford Invitational, Hernandez rebroke the bone in his left foot, and will be out of action for the remainder of the year ... Hernandez will be on crutches for six weeks, and will probably not be able to run until April or May.

Stanford has added a walkon to its roster ... Olatunde Sobomehin (#12) is a 5-foot-11, 169-pound senior guard from Benson High School in Portland, Or ... Sobomehin has served as team manager the past two seasons ... While at Benson High School, Sobomehin was a captain on the basketball team, played soccer and competed on the track & field team ... Averaged six points and six assists per game during his senior season at Benson ... Helped lead the team to an undefeated league championship ... In 1998, Sobomehin helped lead Benson High School to the state championship game ... Sobomehin is majoring in Urban Studies ... Teyo Johnson, who played in 53 games (11 as a starter) during the last two seasons, has decided not play basketball this year ... Johnson, a wide receiver on the football team, has declared for the NFL draft.

The Arizona Wildcats are the overwhelming favorite to finish first in the 2002-03 Pacific-10 Conference men's basketball race, according to a poll of media members who cover Pac-10 men's basketball ... Arizona garnered all 27 first-place votes for 270 points ... Oregon is picked to finish second (237) followed by UCLA (195), Arizona State (160), California (154), USC (152), Stanford (136), Washington (81), Oregon State (71) and Washington State (29).
The Pac-10 Tournament returns to the Los Angeles Staples Center in 2003, with games played March 13 through March 15 ... Fox Sports Net will broadcast the quarterfinals on Thursday and the semifinals on Friday ... Saturday's championship game will be broadcast on CBS.
