Oregon State at Midlands Open; Evanston, Ill.; all day

Oregon State (0-2 overall duals, 0-1 Pacific-10 duals) will get a look at national- and international-caliber competition this weekend when the Beavers take part in the 40th Annual Midlands Open tournament at Northwestern.

A look at the preliminary seedings shows representatives from 17 of the top 25 teams in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Assocition national poll. In addition, the tournament includes numerous post-collegiate wrestlers who have gone on to success at the international level.

'At 149 pounds, the top three seeds are guys who have been out of college four or five years and been on world teams,' OSU head coach Joe Wells said. 'Joe Williams is going for a (Midlands) record eighth title at 174 pounds.

'A college guy is going to have a hard time cracking in there.'

One of the post-collegians competing will be OSU undergraduate assistant coach Nathan Coy, who earned All-America honors by placing fourth in the NCAA Championships for OSU last season. He'll be representing the Orange Crush Mat Club, and he's seeded fifth at 174 pounds.

The Beavers' only current wrestler who is seeded is senior heavyweight Andy Bowlby, who rates eighth at his weight and is coming off an eighth-place finish in the tournament last season. Bowlby, 9-3 with four pins this season, is ninth in Amateur Wrestling News' latest NCAA Division I national rankings and is ranked 11th by InterMat.

The Midlands uses a slightly modified tournament format. Each team is still allowed a limit of 10 competitors, but can spread those entrants however it wishes over the 10 weight classes.

OSU will send nine wrestlers to the meet: Tim Norman at 133 pounds, Mike Unger Jr. at 141 pounds, Matt Ellis and Anthony Weber at 165 pounds, Jake Huffman and Jed Pennell at 174 pounds, Dan Pitsch at 184 pounds, Jason Lovell at 197 pounds and Bowlby at heavyweight.

'We'll leave a couple of our young guys at home training and getting in some extra work between now and the (Jan. 3-4) trip to California,' Wells said.

For the Beavers who are at the Midlands Open, it will be a chance to gauge how they've progressed against top-flight competition since the Las Vegas Invitational on Dec. 6-7.

'That's exactly what we're looking for,' Wells said. 'We need good matches against good competition, and that's what we'll get at the Midlands.'

OREGON STATE ALL-TIME VS. THIS WEEK'S OPPONENTS: Oregon State is competing in the Midlands Open for the third consecutive season. Last year, the Beavers placed 10th in the 65-team tournament; in 2000-01, OSU placed ninth.

LAST WEEK: Oregon State last wrestled on Dec. 13-14, opening its dual meet schedule with an 18-15 loss at Oregon and a 30-15 home loss to No. 11 Nebraska.

On Dec. 13, Oregon State won half the matches, but the night's lone pin made the difference as the Beavers fell to Oregon 18-15 in a Pacific-10 dual. The meet came down to the night's final match, where Duck senior Tony Overstake - a defending Pacific-10 champion - beat true freshman Tony Hook 9-3 at 149 pounds. Hook was 1 of 5 freshmen in the Beaver lineup, and sophomore transfer Matt Ellis was making his first dual meet start for OSU. Ellis was a winner at 165 pounds, and Oregon State also got wins from freshmen Jeremy Ellis at 157 pounds and Dan Pitsch at 184 pounds. Larson and Oregon's Chet McBee set the tone for the night, taking the opening match into overtime. Larson scored a takedown 21 seconds into the extra session for a 9-7 win, starting OSU down the road to winning 5 of the night's first 6 matches. OSU was up 15-3 after the heavyweight match, where the Beavers' Andy Bowlby - ranked 10th nationally by Amateur Wrestling News - took a 6-1 decision over Duck backup Neil Phillips. UO heavyweight Eric Webb, ranked 12th by AWN, missed the meet due to injury. At 125 pounds, the tide turned when Oregon's Martin Michell pinned Brett Phillips in 2:28.

On Dec. 14, Oregon State 184-pounder Dan Pitsch capped a big weekend by knocking off sixth-ranked B.J. Padden of Nebraska 10-5, but the Beavers fell to the 11th-ranked Cornhuskers 30-15. OSU also got a pin from 10th-ranked heavyweight Andy Bowlby, and Beaver 197-pounder Jason Lovell received a forfeit win against Nebraska. Pitsch, a redshirt freshman, earned the biggest win of his young career by beating Padden, who had won the prestigious Las Vegas Invitational last weekend. Padden, also a freshman, entered the dual ranked sixth nationally by Amateur Wrestling News and eighth by InterMat, carrying an 11-1 record with 3 pins.

OREGON STATE HEAD COACH JOE WELLS: Joe Wells, now in his 11th season as Oregon State's head coach, has led the Beavers to a Pacific-10 title and 4 top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships.

The Beavers' 25-10 win over then-No. 11 Boise State in 2001 was Wells' 100th dual meet win at OSU. Since taking over the Beaver program prior to the 1992-93 season, Wells is 115-71-1 for a winning percentage of .618.

The Beavers were Pacific-10 Conference champions under Wells in 1994 and he has twice been named the conference's Coach of the Year. OSU has finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships 4 times in Wells' tenure, placing second in 1995, fourth in 1994, eighth in 1996 and tying for ninth in 1998.

Under Wells, OSU has had 2 national champions, 17 All-Americans and 21 conference champions.

Wells was named the ASICS Oregon Wrestling Classic's Man of the Year for 1998 for his contributions to wrestling in the state.

Wells, who has coached numerous World Teams for the United States, is a 1972 Iowa graduate. He was a 2-time placer at the Big Ten meet and was the 1976 U.S. Wrestling Federation freestyle champ. He spent 17 seasons as an assistant coach at Iowa and Michigan before coming to Oregon State.

OREGON STATE SECOND IN ALL-TIME DUAL MEET WINS: OSU rates as one of the best dual meet teams in collegiate wrestling history. The Beavers were second in all-time dual meet wins among Division I schools and fourth in all-time dual meet winning percentage going into the 2002-03 season. OSU has an all-time dual meet record of 849-263-24 and a .758 winning percentage.

OREGON STATE'S DUAL MEET SCHEDULE: OSU will face one of the nation's toughest dual meet schedules. The Beavers meet 6 teams ranked in the current National Wrestling Coaches Association poll: No. 1 Oklahoma State, No. 4 Oklahoma, No. 10 Arizona State, No. 11 Nebraska, No. 13 Central Michigan and No. 20 Boise State.

OREGON STATE IN GILL COLISEUM: Oregon State has one of the finest homes in college wrestling, 10,400-seat Gill Coliseum. Now in their 47th season in Gill Coliseum, the Beavers have a home dual meet record of 352-66-5 in the arena for a winning percentage of .838. OSU moved its home wrestling meets into Gill Coliseum in 1956-57, when Dale Thomas became head coach. Since then, the arena has hosted conference championship meets 14 times, including 2002, and it was the site of the NCAA Championships in 1961 and 1980.
