UCLA Head Coach Steve Lavin
In his seventh season as Bruin head coach with a school and career mark of 137-63(200 games, 68.5) and 12th year on the UCLA staff (358games, 263-95, 73.5). The Kansas contest was Lavin's200 th game as the Bruin head coach.

The 2001 Pac-10 Coach of the Year, Lavin and Duke'sMike Krzyzewski are the only current coaches who haveguided their teams to five NCAA 'Sweet 16s' in the lastsix seasons.

Lavin entered 2002-03 as the 15 th winningest activecoach (minimum five years as a Div. I head coach/based onpercentage-69.6, 135-59 entering this season).In his Bruin head coaching career, Lavin is 1-0 vs.Michigan. On March 15, 1998 in the second round of theNCAA Tournament in Atlanta (South Region), No. 19UCLA defeated No. 12 Michigan 85-82.

Michigan Head Coach Tommy Amaker
The former Duke standout and assistant coach is in his second season as thehead coach at Michigan (last year, the Wolverines were 11-18).Before taking the Michigan job, Amaker was the headcoach at Seton Hall (1998-01, 68-55). He was an assistantat Duke from 1989-97 and as a Blue Devil player (1984-87),Amaker was one of the nation's top defensive collegeperformers

Before 16,300 atAllen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, KS on Dec 21, Kansasjumped out to a 48-25 halftime lead, withstood a lateUCLA rally and defeated the Bruins 87-70.

With 4:09 left to play, the Bruins cut the KU lead to11 points (75-64) on a layup by Andre Patterson. But in thefinal four minutes, KU outscored the Bruins 12-3. UCLAdid outscore the Jayhawks in the second half (45-39).

UCLA had three players in double figures - led byDijon Thompson's 21 points off the bench, with fiverebounds and assists and four steals; Jason Kapono's firstseason double-double (13 points and a career-high tying 13rebounds) and in his first career start, 12 points fromPatterson.

The Bruins shot 38.7 (season-low, 29-57) from thefield, 33.3 (7-21) from three-point range and 83.3 (season-high,5-6) from the foul line, with a game-high 45 reboundsand a game-high 15 turnovers.

KU shot 51.7 (30-58) from the field, 44.4 (8-18) fromthree-point range and 67.9 (19-28) from the foul line, with36 rebounds and 11 turnovers. The Jayhawks were led byKirk Hinrich's 27 points.

UCLA-Michigan Series
Michigan recently forfeitedits 86-84 OT 1993 NCAA second round victory overUCLA, so the Bruins lead the series 8-0 (an actual 7-1UCLA on-the-court advantage). Michigan is 0-4 in Pauley.The Bruins defeated Michigan 91-80 to win the 1965NCAA title (the Bruins' second NCAA championship).

Looking Ahead
The Bruins open 2003 Pac-10 play onThursday, Jan. 2 at Washington ( 7 p.m.) and Saturday, Jan.4 at Washington State (4 p.m.).

The Wolverines
After dropping its first six games,Michigan has now won four contests in a row, last beatingEastern Michigan 85-57 on Dec. 23 in Ann Arbor.
