Conference Opener Thursday vs. Arizona State
Dec. 30, 2002
Corvallis, Ore. -
SERIES: Oregon State has a 35-23 advantage in the series, according to Pac-10 Conference records. Arizona State had its five-game series win streak, the longest such streak for the Sun Devils, snapped at Gill Coliseum last year (Dec. 22) 62-57. Current Beaver undergraduate coach Adam Masten led the Beavers with 15 points, while Philip Ricci added 14. OSU shot .513 for the game, while ASU managed just .373. Chad Prewitt was the game high scorer with 18 points. The Sun Devils squared last season's series with a 67-58 victory at Wells Fargo Arena.
1-0 WOULD BE NICE: Oregon State has lost its last seven Pac-10 Conference openers. The last time OSU was 1-0 in league play was Jan. 5, 1995 after a 90-89 overtime victory over USC in Corvallis.
JAY JOHN COULD BE THE FIRST...: Beaver head coach Jay John has an opportunity to be the first Beaver coach to win his initial conference game since Jim Anderson defeated Arizona State in 1989-90. Since Anderson's victory, Eddie Payne and Ritchie McKay both lost to Oregon in the opener.
WINNING WITH DEFENSE: With the exception of the white hot shooting of Kansas State Dec. 22, the Beavers have been stingy on defense. The Beavers lead the conference for scoring defense allowing 61.2 points per game. OSU is 7-0 when allowing less than 75 points.
