SATURDAY, JANUARY 4

Oregon State at Cal State-Bakersfield; Bakersfield, Calif.; 7 p.m.

After spending most of the early season in tournament competition, Oregon State (0-2 overall, 0-1 Pacific-10) dives into the portion of its schedule that's heavily weighted toward dual meets. OSU will swing through central California to meet Columbia (0-1) and Fresno State (0-3) in non-leaguers at Fresno on Friday, then visit Cal State-Bakersfield (1-0, 0-0 Pac-10) for a Pac-10 dual on Saturday.

OSU was originally scheduled to meet Embry-Riddle as part of Friday's competition at Fresno State, but Embry-Riddle decided not to mke the trip and the Beavers will wrestle Columbia.

With the meet at Cal State-Bakersfield, the Beavers get into matches that can matter when it comes to the Pacific-10 Championships.

'It's the Pac-10 Conference season, basically,' OSU head coach Joe Wells said. 'We've wrestled some real good teams and seen some of best kids in country. Now we're getting ready to compete in our conference and qualify through our tournament. We're excited to get started ... we're especially conscious of those matches we have in the conference that will affect seeding at the Pac-10 meet. We're setting up a bullseye and trying to pick off some of those guys who are potential Pac-10 guys.

'We're looking for each individual's road map to victory,' Wells said. 'We're looking at how each guy has to go about managing a match to have his best chance to win. We're looking at every person and what they're doing and how we can help them, and how they can improve match by match.'

Columbia, the nation's oldest collegiate program, is celebrating its 100th season this winter. The Lions bring two nationally-ranked wrestlers on its West Coast trip. At 149 pounds, Erik Norgaard is ranked 20th by Amateur Wrestling News; at 165 pounds, Matt Palmer is ranked 15th by AWN and 13th by InterMat.

OREGON STATE ALL-TIME VS. THIS WEEK'S OPPONENTS: There's a long history of intercollegiate wrestling at both schools, but Oregon State and Columbia will be meeting for the first time in dual meet competition. OSU began wrestling in 1909, Columbia in 1904.

Oregon State has an all-time record of 27-12 against Fresno State in a series dating back to 1963. The Bulldogs are on a 2-meet win streak in the series, including a 19-15 win in Corvallis last season and an 18-17 win in Fresno in 2001. OSU's last win was 20-18 in Corvallis in 2000; OSU's last win in Fresno was 24-16 in 1999.

Oregon State has an all-time record of 12-10 against Cal State-Bakersfield in a series dating back to 1977. The Beavers are on a 2-meet win streak in the series, including a 37-7 win in Corvallis last season. The last meeting in Bakersfield was OSU's 22-16 win in 2001.

LAST WEEK: Oregon State tied for 25th place at the 40th Annual Midlands Open on Dec. 28-29 at Northwestern's Welsh-Ryan Arena. The tournament attracted 57 teams, including most of the NCAA Division I top 25 and a number of clubs comprised of some of the nation's top post-collegiate wrestlers.

'We wrestled some close matches and did some good things, we just didn't do enough of them,' OSU head coach Joe Wells said. 'We need to learn how to win a few more matches; we need to learn how to manage matches.'

OSU undergraduate assistant coach Nathan Coy placed fourth in the tournament at 174 pounds. Coy, an All-America last season as a senior for the Beavers, was representing the Orange Crush Mat Club.

The Beavers had 5 of their 9 entrants win their opening matches before running into trouble in the next round. OSU rallied for wins in the early wrestleback rounds before being eliminated later in the evening session.

'We were zeroing in on the placing rounds, and it's good quality competition,' Wells said. 'There were a lot of close matches, a lot of overtimes, and a lot of matches coming down to the better basics. The competitive level is excellent - it points out your weaknesses when you have that high a level of competition. It exposes your areas of concern, and we're doing some things we need to make adjustments for.'

OSU 174-pounder Jake Huffman advanced to the wrestleback third round before being beaten by Ohio State's Anthony Magistrelli 7-5 in overtime. Earlier, Huffman had taken a 3-1 overtime decision over Bill Lowney of Northern Illinois, ranked 20th nationally by Amateur Wrestling News.

Heavyweight Andy Bowlby, OSU's only seeded wrestler at eighth, earned a first-round pin before being beaten by ninth-seeded Nick Preston, a post-collegian wrestling for the Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club. Bowlby, ranked ninth nationally by AWN, was eliminated by 14th-ranked Greg Wagner of Michigan 3-2 in the wrestleback second round.

Several Beavers came close to upsets. At 141 pounds, Mike Unger Jr. lost 3-2 to 20th-ranked Clark Forward of Michigan; at 165 pounds, Matt Ellis took 14th-ranked Chris Vecchio of Penn State into overtime before losing 6-4 and Jed Pennell lost a tough 5-3 decision to top-ranked Matt Lackey of Illinois.

'Our conditioning is good, but we're just not using it very well,' Wells said. 'It's just doing a lot of those little things we need to do and getting more disciplined to win the matches. We had a lot of one-point matches today, and we just need to give ourselves more chances to win the match. We need to work on our weaknesses and continue to do those things that we're strong at.

'We definitely had some glaring weaknesses, and this is the time to see those, when you still have a chance to work on those (prior to postseason competition). Now we're exctied about getting back and getting to work, then going to California next week,' Wells said.

OREGON STATE HEAD COACH JOE WELLS: Joe Wells, now in his 11th season as Oregon State's head coach, has led the Beavers to a Pacific-10 title and 4 top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships.

The Beavers' 25-10 win over then-No. 11 Boise State in 2001 was Wells' 100th dual meet win at OSU. Since taking over the Beaver program prior to the 1992-93 season, Wells is 115-71-1 for a winning percentage of .618.

The Beavers were Pacific-10 Conference champions under Wells in 1994 and he has twice been named the conference's Coach of the Year. OSU has finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships 4 times in Wells' tenure, placing second in 1995, fourth in 1994, eighth in 1996 and tying for ninth in 1998.

Under Wells, OSU has had 2 national champions, 17 All-Americans and 21 conference champions.

Wells was named the ASICS Oregon Wrestling Classic's Man of the Year for 1998 for his contributions to wrestling in the state.

Wells, who has coached numerous World Teams for the United States, is a 1972 Iowa graduate. He was a 2-time placer at the Big Ten meet and was the 1976 U.S. Wrestling Federation freestyle champ. He spent 17 seasons as an assistant coach at Iowa and Michigan before coming to Oregon State.

OREGON STATE SECOND IN ALL-TIME DUAL MEET WINS: OSU rates as one of the best dual meet teams in collegiate wrestling history. The Beavers were second in all-time dual meet wins among Division I schools and fourth in all-time dual meet winning percentage going into the 2002-03 season. OSU has an all-time dual meet record of 849-263-24 and a .758 winning percentage.

OREGON STATE'S DUAL MEET SCHEDULE: OSU will face one of the nation's toughest dual meet schedules. The Beavers meet 7 teams ranked in the Dec. 17 National Wrestling Coaches Association poll: No. 1 Oklahoma State, No. 4 Oklahoma, No. 10 Arizona State, No. 11 Nebraska, No. 13 Central Michigan, No. 16 Wisconsin and No. 20 Boise State.

OREGON STATE IN GILL COLISEUM: Oregon State has one of the finest homes in college wrestling, 10,400-seat Gill Coliseum. Now in their 47th season in Gill Coliseum, the Beavers have a home dual meet record of 352-66-5 in the arena for a winning percentage of .838.

OSU moved its home wrestling meets into Gill Coliseum in 1956-57, when Dale Thomas became head coach. Since then, the arena has hosted conference championship meets 14 times, including 2002, and it was the site of the NCAA Championships in 1961 and 1980.
