Gymnastics Team Ranked Pre-Season No. 1

Three-time NCAA Women's Gymnastics Champion UCLA was voted pre-season No. 1 for the third consecutive year in a pre-season vote by coaches. The Bruins received 20 of 31 first-place votes.

Head coach Valorie Kondos Field, a four-time NACGC Coach of the Year, returns eight All-Americans from last year's Pac-10 championship squad, including 2002 NCAA all-around, floor and vault champion Jamie Dantzscher, 2001 NCAA all-around co-champion Onnie Willis, and 2000 Olympians Yvonne Tousek, Alyssa Beckerman and Kristen Maloney. Freshmen Holly Murdock and Kate Richardson, who finished 14th and 16th, respectively, at the 2001 World Championships, begin their first year with the Bruins.

UCLA will face nine of the Top 25 teams in the polls this season, including No. 4 Utah on the road Jan. 10, No. 6 Michigan on the road Mar. 7, No. 7 Stanford on the road Feb. 7 and No. 10 Arizona at home on Feb. 23. The Bruins will also compete against No. 12 Oklahoma (Mar. 16), No. 13 Oregon State (Jan. 2 and Jan. 24), No. 15 Arizona State (Feb. 16), No. 17 Washington (Feb. 9) and No. 24 North Carolina (Mar. 16).
