Beavers Split Wrestling Duals

Jan. 3, 2003

FRESNO, Calif. - Oregon State picked up its first dual meet win of the wrestling season Friday evening, beating Columbia 35-7 in the first-ever meeting between two of the nation's oldest programs; the Lions began intercollegiate wrestling in 1904 and OSU in 1909. The Beavers then dropped the finale of their non-league doubleheader to host Fresno State, losing 24-9 at the Bulldogs' North Gym.

OSU (1-3 overall, 0-1 Pacific-10) completes its road trip Saturday night when the Beavers visit Cal State-Bakersfield for a Pac-10 dual.

On Friday, standouts for the Beavers included 133-pounder Tim Norman, 184-pounder Dan Pitsch and heavyweight Andy Bowlby.

Norman beat Columbia's Steve Popovich 11-3, then topped Fresno State's Ben Martinez 6-1.

'Tim did a real nice job,' OSU head coach Joe Wells said. 'Martinez is a real good kid, and they're the same class (sophomores), so Tim his going to see him for a long time. Tim rode him hard, knocked him down and wore him out.'

Bowlby earned his sixth pin of the season, flattening Columbia's Bart Seemen in 3:27 and then beating Fresno State's Clint Walbeck 5-3. The pin was the 14th of Bowlby's career, moving him into a tie for 44th place on OSU's list of all-time leaders; he needs three more pins to move into Oregon State's top 50 in single-season pins.

'Andy worked hard,' Wells said of the senior, who improved to 12-4 this season. 'He turned him over in the third period, then ended up catching him and putting him on his back.'

Pitsch received a forfeit against Columbia, then faced Fresno State's Jatinder Singh, who had eliminated him from the Las Vegas Invitational in early December. This time, Pitsch took a 5-3 victory to improve to 10-5 this season.

'Dan just controlled the match,' Wells said. 'He scored the first takedown and then really made the guy (Singh) work.'

The Beavers picked up an upset against Columbia at 149 pounds, where OSU freshman Tony Hook beat Erik Norgaard, ranked 20th in the nation by Amateur Wrestling News, in a 5-4 decision.
