Bruins Halt Huskies' Eight-Game Winning Streak
Jan. 3, 2003
LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Washington women's basketball had its eight-game winning streak come to a close at Pauley Pavilion Friday night, as UCLA defeated the Huskies 72-46. Suffering its first loss since Nov. 24, Washington falls to 9-2 overall and 1-1 in the Pac-10 while the Bruins improve to 8-4, 3-0 against conference opponents.
Junior All-America candidate Giuliana Mendiola led the Huskies with her second double-double of the season with team-highs in points (14) and rebounds (10). Fellow All-America candidate and senior Loree Payne added 10 points and a season-high eight rebounds.
UCLA had three players in double figures led by freshman Lisa Willis' 17 off the bench. Michelle Greco and Whitney Jones scored 14 and 10 points, respectively.
The Bruins held the Huskies to a season-low 46 points as UW shot 23.9 percent from the field (16-67) and 20 percent from the three-point line (5-25), both season-low performances. UW was perfect from the free-throw line sinking all nine attempts. Turnovers also proved costly, as UCLA scored 23 points off Washington's 17 turnovers.
UW's only lead of the game came on the first bucket of the game by Mendiola, only to have Jones answer with a field goal of her own to tie. From there, the Bruins cruised out to as much as a 12-point advantage late in the first half.
Washington's first basket of the second half by senior Emily Autrey got the Huskies within eight, but a 12-0 run put UW down 52-28 with just over 10 minutes remaining. UCLA led by as many as 25 points at the 4:33 mark but its 26-point margin of victory was its largest overall lead of the game.
The UW eight-game winning streak was its longest since a 10-0 start to the 1997-98 season.
Washington will look to regroup as its Southern California road swing continues with USC Sunday, at 2 p.m. at the LA Sports Arena.
