Huskies Trip Up Trojans

SEATTLE (AP) - Bobby Jones's put-back with three seconds remaining put theWashington Huskies ahead for good in a 76-72 victory over Southern Californiaon Saturday.

USC (5-4, 1-1) had one final chance, but Errick Craven took the inboundspass and stepped out of bounds with 2.1 seconds remaining.

Washington's Will Conroy was then fouled and hit two free throws to seal thewin for the Huskies, which broke a seven-game losing streak against theTrojans.

Conroy scored 19 points for Washington (6-5, 1-1 Pac-10).

Doug Wrenn recorded Washington's first double-double of the season with 24points and 11 rebounds.

USC's Nick Curtis recorded his second double-double of the season with 17points and 15 rebounds while Desmon Farmer and Rory O'Neil each added 16points.

Curtis hit the first of two free throws with 36.5 seconds remaining to tiethe game at 72-72, but missed the second, which set up Wrenn's miss and Jones'decisive put-back.

USC led by as many as 21 points in the first half, but Washington closed thegap to ten points by halftime. Wrenn hit two free throws with 4:49 remainingand Washington took the lead for the first time since the game's openingbasket.

After Washington's Mike Jensen hit the game's first basket, SouthernCalifornia threatened to rout the Huskies with a 22-1 run.

Washington coach Lorenzo Romar called timeout with the Huskies trailing 12-3five minutes into the game but couldn't slow down the Trojans.

USC increased its lead to 22-3 less than nine minutes into the game afterscoring 14 points in the paint and eight points off turnovers versus none ineither category for Washington.

The Huskies made just one of their first 15 shots from the floor.

Washington closed out the first half with a 10-2 run, capped by Conroy'sshort fast break leaner that brought the Huskies to within 40-30 at halftime,though it was still Washington's biggest halftime deficit of the season.
