Volleyball Finishes 10th In Final AVCA Coaches Poll

Jan. 6, 2003

TUCSON, Ariz.- The Arizona volleyball team's strong run through the postseason NCAA tournament earned the Wildcats a ranking of 10th in the final AVCA Coaches Poll. The ranking marks the third consecutive top 10 finish for the program.

Conference foes USC, the 2002 national champions, and Stanford finished in the top two spots, respectively, and were followed by Hawaii, Florida and Nebraska in the top 5.

The Pac-10, which had a conference record eight teams invited to the NCAA tournament, saw five teams finish in the top 25 and three others just outside, but still receiving votes. Washington State ended the year ranked seventh and UCLA No. 15, while California, Washington and Arizona State all received votes.

The Wildcats, who finished the 2002 season with a 20-12 record, advanced to their third consecutive Elite Eight with tournament victories over Texas-Arlington, Texas and Minnesota. Arizona's loss to Stanford in the regional finals marked the fifth straight season that the Wildcats' season ended to either the eventual national champion or the runner up.

Arizona will return four starters for the 2003 season, including AVCA National Freshman of the Year Kim Glass and classmate Bre Ladd, a freshman All-Pac-10 selection.
