'There's a variety of levels of opposition and there are a bunch of matches,' OSU head coach Joe Wells said. 'It's a good opportunity for us to get a lot of matches, to look at our match strengths and at our match management. We'll be looking to get out and set the pace and score some points.'

The Oregon Wrestling Classic includes the state's dual meet championshps for all three high school classifications, plus a youth tournament.

'It's a great opportunity to see the talent in the state,' Wells said. 'The high schools, the young kids coming up ... it's a fun environment and it's a great venue for competition.'

The Beavers will get a little change of scenery in facing Central Michigan and Wisconsin. OSU will also be happy to see Gill Coliseum again; the Beavers have wrestled just once in their home arena so far this season.

'We've been doing a fair amount of traveling,' Wells said. 'It's going to be fun to wrestle in front of the hometown folks.'

Last season, OSU won 36-3 in Corvallis. PSU's last win was in 1990 by a 21-16 score in Portland, and the teams tied 19-19 in Portland in 1991.

Oregon State has an all-time record of 9-1 against Cal State-Fullerton in a series dating back to 1973; the Beavers are on a 4-meet winning streak against the Titans. The last meeting was in 2001, when OSU won 45-0 in Fullerton; CSUF's lone win was in 1991 by a 17-15 score in Fullerton.

Oregon State has an all-time record of 2-2 against Wisconsin in a series dating back to 1995; the Beavers are on a 2-meet win streak against the Badgers. The most recent meeting was in 1999 when OSU won 19-18 in the Texas Duals; Wisconsin's last win was in 1996 by a 31-6 score in Madison.

Oregon State and Pacific Lutheran have never wrestled a dual meet against each other prior to this season.

Oregon State and Central Michigan have never wrestled a dual meet against each other prior to this season.

LAST WEEK: Oregon State won 2 of 3 dual meets on a 2-day swing through Central California. On Jan. 3, the Beavers beat Columbia 35-7 and lost to Fresno State 24-9 in Fresno; on Jan. 4, OSU beat Cal State-Bakersfield 29-10 in Bakersfield.

On Jan. 3, Oregon State picked up its first dual meet win of the wrestling season by beating Columbia 35-7 in the first-ever meeting between two of the nation's oldest programs; the Lions began intercollegiate wrestling in 1904 and OSU in 1909. The Beavers then dropped the finale of their non-league doubleheader to host Fresno State, losing 24-9 at the Bulldogs' North Gym. Standouts for the Beavers included 133-pounder Tim Norman, 184-pounder Dan Pitsch and heavyweight Andy Bowlby. Norman beat Columbia's Steve Popovich 11-3, then topped Fresno State's Ben Martinez 6-1; Bowlby earned his sixth pin of the season, flattening Columbia's Bart Seemen in 3:27 and then beating Fresno State's Clint Walbeck 5-3; Pitsch received a forfeit against Columbia, then faced Fresno State's Jatinder Singh, who had eliminated him from the Las Vegas Invitational in early December. This time, Pitsch took a 5-3 victory to improve to 10-5 this season. The Beavers picked up an upset against Columbia at 149 pounds, where OSU freshman Tony Hook beat Erik Norgaard, ranked 20th in the nation by Amateur Wrestling News, in a 5-4 decision.

On Jan. 4, OSU heavyweight Andy Bowlby recorded his seventh pin of the season and 149-pounder Tony Hook earned another as the Beavers beat Cal State-Bakersfield 29-10. Oregon State also got major decisions from 165-pounder Matt Ellis and 174-pounder Jake Huffman as OSU won the night's first 5 matches to take a 20-0 lead. Bowlby flattened CSUB's Chad Troxler in 3:23; it was the 15th pin of the senior's career, moving him into a tie for 41st place on the Beavers' all-time list of career leaders. Bowlby, ranked 10th nationally by Amateur Wrestling News, improved to 13-4 this season; he's earned a pin in 7 of his last 11 matches. Hook, a freshman, pinned the Roadrunners' Jon Sharpe in 3:33. Both of Hook's pins have come against Sharpe, with the first in the Las Vegas Invitational. OSU 197-pounder Jason Lovell and 141-pounder Mike Unger Jr. also gutted out wins. Lovell, who fought through minor injuries on Friday, took early control of an 8-5 win over Scott O'Rear. But midway through the match, Lovell found himself on his back for a prolonged period; he struggled to avoid the pin, worked his way back on top and went on to the victory. Unger went into overtime with CSUB's Anthony Baza, then had to take over 1 minute of injury time in the extra period. When the match restarted, Unger managed a takedown within a few seconds for a 12-10 win.

OREGON STATE HEAD COACH JOE WELLS: Joe Wells, now in his 11th season as Oregon State's head coach, has led the Beavers to a Pacific-10 title and 4 top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships.

The Beavers' 25-10 win over then-No. 11 Boise State in 2001 was Wells' 100th dual meet win at OSU. Since taking over the Beaver program prior to the 1992-93 season, Wells is 117-72-1 for a winning percentage of .618.

The Beavers were Pacific-10 Conference champions under Wells in 1994 and he has twice been named the conference's Coach of the Year. OSU has finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships 4 times in Wells' tenure, placing second in 1995, fourth in 1994, eighth in 1996 and tying for ninth in 1998.

Under Wells, OSU has had 2 national champions, 17 All-Americans and 21 conference champions.

Wells was named the ASICS Oregon Wrestling Classic's Man of the Year for 1998 for his contributions to wrestling in the state.

Wells, who has coached numerous World Teams for the United States, is a 1972 Iowa graduate. He was a 2-time placer at the Big Ten meet and was the 1976 U.S. Wrestling Federation freestyle champ. He spent 17 seasons as an assistant coach at Iowa and Michigan before coming to Oregon State.

OREGON STATE SECOND IN ALL-TIME DUAL MEET WINS: OSU rates as one of the best dual meet teams in collegiate wrestling history. The Beavers were second in all-time dual meet wins among Division I schools and fourth in all-time dual meet winning percentage going into the 2002-03 season. OSU has an all-time dual meet record of 851-264-24 and a .758 winning percentage.

OREGON STATE'S DUAL MEET SCHEDULE: OSU will face one of the nation's toughest dual meet schedules. The Beavers meet 7 teams ranked in the Jan. 8 National Wrestling Coaches Association poll: No. 1 Oklahoma State, No. 5 Oklahoma, No. 10 Central Michigan, No. 11 Arizona State, No. 12 Nebraska, No. 19 Wisconsin and No. 20 Boise State.

OSU moved its home wrestling meets into Gill Coliseum in 1956-57, when Dale Thomas became head coach. Since then, the arena has hosted conference championship meets 14 times, including 2002, and it was the site of the NCAA Championships in 1961 and 1980.
