Matt Gentry Wins 15th As Cardinal Fall to UPenn

Jan. 9, 2003

Stanford, Calif. - Stanford (2-6) hosted the 23rd-ranked University of Pennsylvania (1-0) tonight in Burnham Pavilion. The Quakers, with four wrestlers ranked in the top-20, captured a 38-6 win on the strength of three pins and a forfeit. Sophomores Matt Gentry (Grants Pass, OR/North Valley) and Garrett Johnston (McAlester, OK/McAlester) both notched wins for the Cardinal.

Stanford took a 3-0 lead after Johnston recorded a 6-4 decision in the opening bout at 165 pounds. Johnston took a 2-0 lead in the first period, but the Quakers' Richard Ferguson scored a reversal that Johnston escaped from to end the second period with Johnston leading by one. Johnston then scored a reversal to extend his lead to three, before Ferguson scored his final points with 40 seconds left in the match on his second reversal. Johnston finished with an escape and held to win the contest by a 6-4 mark.

After the initial lead, the Cardinal suffered eight straight losses as Pennsylvania scored one forfeit, three pins, two major decisions, and two decisions for a 38-3 lead.

At 157 pounds, Gentry ended the evening on a high note as he held senior Brett Vanderveer scoreless. The bout was tied at 0-0 after the first three minutes, but the Cardinal's win leader scored an escape early in the second period before adding a takedown for the 3-0 lead. Gentry scored a second takedown for the 5-0 decision and his 15th victory this season.

Before the meet, two of Stanford's redshirt freshmen competed in exhibition bouts. Luis Vendrell dropped a 14-5 decision to Dan Mousetis and Mark Egesdal fell to Matt Smtih 6-2.

Stanford will be back in action on Saturday at the Aggie Invitational on the campus of UC Davis for the all day tournament. The Cardinal will travel north next weekend to face Oregon and Oregon State on Friday and Portland State on Saturday.
