UCLA Hosts St. John's in Non-Conference Action on Saturday

St. John's at UCLA - Steve Lavin's UCLA Bruins, 2-1 in Pac-10 play and 4-6 overall, play Big East opponent St. John's (7-4) on Saturday (Jan. 11) at Pauley Pavilion. Tipoff is set for Noon (TV-FSN/FSNW with Steve Physioc and Marques Johnson; Radio-XTRA Sports 690/1150, with Chris Roberts and Don MacLean).
Steve Lavin - In his seventh season as the Bruin head coach with a school and career mark of 139-65 (204 games, 68.1) and 12th year on the UCLA staff (265-97, 362 games, 73.2). The 2001 Pac-10 Coach of the Year, Lavin and Duke's Mike Krzyzewski are the only current coaches who have guided their teams to five NCAA 'Sweet 16s' in the last six seasons. Lavin entered 2002-03 as the 15th winningest active coach (minimum five years as a Div. I head coach/based on percentage-entering 2002-03, Lavin's record was 135-59, 69.6). This is Lavin's first meeting with St. John's.
UCLA's Last Game - On Jan. 8 before 12,736 at Pauley Pavilion, UCLA saw its second-half rally come up short and dropped an 80-75 decision to USC. It was the Bruins' first Pac-10 Conference loss of the year after two victories in the state of Washington.The Bruins opened a 10-point lead (33-23) in the first half and led 40-38 at halftime. In the second half, UCLA trailed by as many as 11 points but cut the deficit to two (70-68) with 3:14 remaining. However, USC scored eight of the next 10 points to open a 78-70 lead with 38 seconds left in the contest.UCLA had five players in double figures, led by Dijon Thompson's 16 points off the bench. T.J. Cummings recorded his second career double-double with 13 points and a career-high 14 rebounds, Cedric Bozeman and Andre Patterson (eight rebounds) added 11 points each and Jason Kapono had 10. Ryan Walcott contributed a career-high 11 assists.UCLA shot 41.3 (31-75) from the field, 15.4 (4-26) from three-point range and 75.0 (9-12) from the foul line, with 41 rebounds, 19 assists and 11 turnovers.USC shot 47.5 (29-61) from the field, 50.0 (8-16) from three-point range and 53.8 (14-26) from the foul line, with 41 rebounds, 10 assists and 14 turnovers. The Trojans were led by Desmon Farmer's 25 points and Errick Craven's 24 points.
St. John's - The Red Storm enters Saturday's game with a record of 7-4 but have lost four of their last six, including a 75-71 loss at Providence on Wednesday. That loss snapped a two-game winning streak.St. John's leads the series, 4-2, and has won the last four meetings between the two schools. The last time the two schools met in Pauley Pavilion was on Dec. 12, 1987 and St. John's emerged victories, 72-64.

Looking Ahead - Following the St. John's game, the Bruins will return to Pauley Pavilion next week to face Arizona State on Thursday, Jan. 16 (7:30 p.m.) and Arizona on Saturday, Jan. 18 (3:00 p.m.).
Jason Kapono - UCLA's school record holder in three-pointers (279), Kapono is now the No. 10 (1,782) all-time scorer in Bruin history (No. 9, Charles O'Bannon, 1,784, 1994-97).Vs. USC, Kapono scored 10 points, and had three rebounds and two assists. Last Saturday, he enjoyed one of the best games in school history. He scored a career-high 44 points, the highest total ever by a Bruin forward and tied for the fifth-highest scoring total in school history with Lew Alcindor (now Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) and Bill Walton (only Alcindor has scored more points as a Bruin - four times). Kapono made a school-record nine three-point field goals on 10 attempts and hit 14 of 19 shots from the floor and all seven free throws.He has started all 10 games and is UCLA's leader in minutes. Kapono has scored in double figures nine times, including his 44-point game at Washington State.
Andre Patterson - He's appeared in seven games and started the last five. Vs. USC, Patterson contributed 11 points and eight rebounds. He's shooting a team-best 64.3 (27-42) from the field.
T. J. Cummings - He's led the Bruins in scoring three times this season. On Wednesday, he recorded his second career double-double with 13 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. He is third on the team in scoring (12.3) and second in rebounds (5.7).
Cedric Bozeman - He has started all 10 games for the Bruins and is second on the team in assists (3.9) and fifth in scoring (7.5). He scored 11 points (5-6, 1-2, 0-1) against USC.
Ryan Walcott - He has started the last four games and is UCLA's assist leader (5.1). Against USC, he contributed a career-high 11 assists to go with his seven points.
Off the Bench
Dijon Thompson - UCLA's second-leading scorer (15.3), he has come off the bench in his last seven games (missed Michigan with a swollen knee). He has led the team in scoring four times, including 16 points vs. USC and is shooting 56.6 from the floor, second on the team.
Ray Young - One of UCLA's senior captains, he is averaging 8.7 points and 4.0 rebounds in 22.6 minutes. He has come off the bench in each of the last four games.
