Beavers clinch fourth-straight winning season with victory at Utah

Jan. 10, 2003

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Naya Higashijima, Ausra Pacebutaite and Birte Steven each won two individual events, and a 1-2-3 Oregon State finish in the final individual event helped the Beavers defeat Utah 148-134 Friday evening.

'Regardless of what happened I would have been proud of the effort we put together,' OSU head coach Mariusz Podkoscielny said. 'We were swimming fast but definitely felt the altitude and were running out of juice. Today was probably the most exciting meet we've had all season because of how we came together and won.'

With five duals remaining, the Beavers (8-2 overall, 0-2 Pacific-10) assured themselves of a fourth-consecutive winning season. The eight wins is the highest win total since the Beavers started competing in the Pac-10 in 1986-87, and the fourth-highest victory mark in school history.

'It's nice for the program, school and the fans to get the winning record,' said Podkoscielny, whose teams have finished with seven wins in each of the previous three seasons. 'We are still the program that looks for results at the end of line at the Pac-10 and NCAA Championship meets.'

The Beavers had to make up an 18-point deficit from diving because OSU does not field a diving squad. Earning top-three finishes was an area that helped Oregon State Friday.

OSU finished first and second in three events. Higashijima and Monika Miroslaw placed first and second in the 200-yard butterfly, as did Suzanne Starkey and Christina Kinney in the 100 butterfly, and Pacebutaite and Starkey in the 100 backstroke.

The Beavers swept the top-three places in the 200 breaststroke with Steven, Paula Finlay and Mari Embertson finishing in that order. In the 200 individual medley, the second-to-last event of the evening, the Beavers accomplished the feat again. Finlay finished first, followed by Steven and Leah Schaab.

'The meet was up in the air until the last two events,' Podkoscielny said. 'When we felt we had the Utes on their heals they would come back. The 200 individual medley put us back where we needed to be point wise.'

The Beavers face Brigham Young 10 a.m. PST Saturday in a meet Podkoscielny believes will test his team.

'The primary goal for tomorrow is to race hard,' he said. 'It will be a test to see how tough we are as a group. It is the perfect setup for us that can't be simulated. We are looking for tough, tough racing and making sure we don't take a step back regardless of how tired we are.'
