Bowlby Pins Two More

Oregon State heavyweight Andy Bowlby recorded a pair of first-period pins and a decision over a nationally-ranked opponent Friday as the Beavers won three of their four matches at the Oregon Wrestling Classic Duals. OSU (5-4 overall, 3-1 Pacific-10) beat Portland State 46-0 and Cal State-Fullerton 26-12 in Pacific-10 duals before taking No. 19 Wisconsin to the final match in a 23-18 loss; the Beavers finished the evening with a 36-4 win over Pacific Lutheran.

The opening weight drawn for the event was 165 pounds, and OSU's Matt Ellis, 174-pounder Jake Huffman and 184-pounder Dan Pitsch teamed to give the Beavers three straight wins to open each of the first three duals. The Beavers now return home to wrestle No. 10 Central Michigan on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Gill Coliseum.

'I can see improvement,' said OSU head coach Joe Wells, whose team has won five of its last seven dual meets. 'We're getting tougher and the number of shots we're taking is going up, so we're getting more takedowns. Our conditioning is good; we've just got to keep working on that and keep using that.'

Oregon State had a chance to upset Wisconsin until the final moments, when 157-pounder Brian Duhrkoop couldn't quite complete a takedown of the Badgers' Dennis McSweeney when trailing 2-1; McSweeney then managed a takedown with on second left for a 4-1 win and the dual victory.

'After the first couple of duals this season, we weren't showing our best side,' Bowlby said. 'We came into this weekend wanting to show we were a better team ... Wisconsin is a good team, and we went to the wire with them.'

OSU had led 12-0, but Wisconsin took the momentum when Lee Kramer pinned the Beavers' Jed Lowe at 197 pounds. Lowe had controlled the match, leading 7-2 after a three-point near fall with 43 seconds left in the first period; but his hold slipped, allowing Kramer a reversal that took Lowe to his back with 16 seconds left. Lowe kept fought off the pin until one second remained in the period.

Bowlby, ranked 10th nationally by Amateur Wrestling News, then took an 8-3 decision over 18th-ranked Justin Staebler of Wisconsin. It was Bowlby's 12th win in his last 14 matches, improving his record this season to 16-4 with nine pins; earlier in the day, he'd pinned Portland State's Antonio Criado in 19 seconds and Cal State-Fullerton's Edgar Hernandez in 1:15.

'I've been going out and looking for the fall,' said Bowlby, whose nine pins have all come in his last 13 matches. 'I've just been lucky enough to catch them a lot. I've been throwing people pretty well; I need to work on my shooting to complete the package. I've got 10 weeks to work on that (before the NCAA Championships).'

Bowlby's nine pins tie him for 48th place on OSU's all-time list of single-season leaders; he now has 17 career pins, tying him for 34th place on OSU's all-time list of career pin leaders.

Ellis' day gave him a four-meet win streak, and his leadoff performance was the perfect example of what Wells wants to see from the Beavers.

'You've got to have that momentum; you've got to have somebody come out and set the pace and let people know what you can do,' Wells said. 'Then the guys who maybe were a little unsure of what they could do feed off that; they come in and don't have those doubts. That's what we're going for, up and down the lineup, and we've seen fits and starts of that.'

Ellis recorded a major decision and two decisions; Huffman had a pin, a major decision and a forfeit; and Pitsch had a pin, a decision and a forfeit.

The Beavers' blanking of Portland State was OSU's first shutout since blanking Central Washington 44-0 early last season. The last time Oregon State had shut out an NCAA Division I school was a 45-0 win at Cal State-Fullerton late in the 2001 season. It was both OSU's highest score and the Beavers' largest margin of victory since a 46-0 win over Pacific (Ore.) early in the 1993 season, and OSU's largest margin of victory and highest score against a Division I opponent since beating Oregon 51-0 near the end of the 1984 season.
