Cougars Fall To Arizona State 66-58
Jan. 11, 2003
PULLMAN, Wash. - - Washington State's Jessica Perry scored 20 points and Bianca McCall recorded a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds in the Cougars' 66-58 loss to the Arizona State Sun Devils in Pacific-10 Conference women's basketball action, Saturday at Friel Court.
Perry's point output was just one shy of her career high and McCall's performance marked her third double-double of the season. In addition, McCall has recorded 10 games - including the last four in a row - in which she has scored in double figures.
Arizona State's Jill Noe led all scorers with 23 points while Kristen Kovesdy added 15 points for the Sun Devils (11-4, 3-3 Pac-10).
The Cougars (0-13, 0-5 Pac-10) never trailed in the first half and held as much as a 10-point advantage before ending the opening 20 minutes with a 24-19 lead.
WSU extended it halftime advantage to 33-24 with 16:32 remaining. However, a 16-5 Sun Devil run gave ASU its first lead of the game at 40-38 at the 11:20 mark.
The Cougars responded with consecutive buckets by McCall and Perry to retake the lead at 42-40 with 10:36 remaining. Trailing 43-42, the Sun Devils scored five consecutive points to take the lead for good at 47-43 at the 7:52 mark. WSU would get no closer than three points the rest of the way.
'The kids worked really hard; I thought they did a great job,' said WSU Head Coach Sherri Murrell. 'I thought Arizona State was on its heels most of the game.
'If we played this way in the preseason there is no way we would have gone 0-8,' added Murrell. 'We are getting better and I am excited about that. It's just not showing up in the win column.'
Both teams struggled from the floor, as ASU was 22-of-62 (35.5 percent) while WSU shot 17-of-52 (32.7 percent).
The Cougars return to action at Stanford, Thursday, Jan. 16 at 7 p.m.
