Men's Tennis Falls to Illinois in Hawaii

Jan. 11, 2003

Waikaloa, Hawaii - The Oregon men's tennis team competed against Illinois in its first action of the new year, winning two of three doubles matches in the process. The Ducks were unable to win a singles match against the Illini, but had their chances near the top of the singles lineup.

The highlight for Oregon, though, was clearly its doubles play. Oded Teig and Sven Swinnen defeated Amer Delic and Michael Calkins of Illinois, the No. 6 team in the nation during the preseason, 8-6. Delic and Calkins are expected to be ranked at least in the top five when the first regular season rankings come out on Monday. Jason Menke teamed with Arron Spencer to knock off Ryler DeHeart and Chris Martin at the No. 3 position, 8-3.

'Doubles was definitely a good showing today,' head coach Chris Russell said. 'Oded and Sven played very well today. Some of the other guys need to find a little more consistency.'

In singles play, the Illini won all six matches in straight sets. Teig and Swinnen came the closest to pulling off upsets at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Teig lost his match to Delic, 6-3, 7-5, and Swinnen lost to Phil Stolt, 6-2, 7-6. Teig and Swinnen each had leads late in the second set before the Illinois players pulled out the victories.

Oregon played without sophomore star Manuel Kost, who rested a strained muscle. The match does not count against Oregon's team record, but the individual results do count.
