Beavers Sign Three In Baseball
Jan. 14, 2003
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State signed three players to complete its 2002 class for the early signing period, OSU head coach Pat Casey announced Tuesday. Joining OSU next fall will be lefthanded pitcher Kyle Aselton (Chehalis, Wash./W.F. West HS, Lower Columbia CC), righthanded pitcher Andrew Myette (Gig Harbor, Wash./Guilford Park Secondary HS [Surrey, B.C.], Lower Columbia CC) and shortstop Chad Schroeder (Everett, Wash./Cascade HS).
The trio joins six previous signees - lefthanded pitcher/outfielder Kevin Gunderson (Portland, Ore./Central Catholic HS), righthanded pitcher Brett Hawley (Bellevue, Wash./Newport HS), lefthanded pitcher/outfielder Kevin Joslyn (Spokane, Wash./Mt. Spokane HS, Columbia Basin JC), righthanded pitcher Jonah Nickerson (Milwaukie, Ore./Oregon City HS), lefthanded pitcher Eric O'Flaherty (Walla Walla, Wash./Walla Walla HS) and catcher Casey Priseman (Woodinville, Wash./Woodinville HS).
Aselton and Myette will be teammates this spring at Lower Columbia Community College.
'Both of them could be guys who make an immediate impact for us,' Casey said. 'They come from a very good junior college program, the same place (former OSU All-American) Scott Nicholson came from. Both of those guys are capable of coming in and really helping us. With what we could lose after next season to graduation and the draft, we were looking to get some junior college pitchers who could help us right away.'
Aselton was 5-0 with a 1.69 earned run average last season; in 48.0 innings, he walked 22 and struck out 47. At W.F. West, he was his league's Most Valuable Player and an all-area selection in 2001; he was the 29th-round draft pick of the Seattle Mariners that year.
'I had wanted to go to Oregon State before last season,' Aselton said of selecting OSU. 'I like the town, and it seemed like I could fit in there.'
Myette sat out last season rehabilitating his arm after an injury. In 2001, he was 5-1 with a 3.00 ERA for College of Southern Idaho.
'Oregon State seems like a well-organized program. They've got good facilities, the coaches seem cool - I think I'm going to learn a lot there,' said Myette, whose older brother Aaron pitches for the Texas Rangers. Andrew Myette was the Rangers' 17th-round draft pick in 2000.
Schroeder will play his final season of high school baseball this spring.
'We think Chad is outstanding defensively,' Casey said. 'We were fortunate to get him to sign with us late in the signing period. We saw him play in Arizona in a pretty good high school tournament, and he was as good, defensively, as anybody down there.'
Schroeder batted .406 as a junior with 27 doubles, driving in 35 runs and going 31-for-32 on stolen bases. He earned all-league first team and all-area first team honors after being an all-league second team pick as a sophomore.
'I liked the school and it being a college town, and it's a very good baseball program,' Schroeder said of choosing OSU.
Oregon State opens its 2003 season with a series Feb. 7-9 at California-Riverside. The Beavers home-opener will be March 4 against Portland.
