No. 10 Cal Begins Season with 5-2 Win over No. 18 Pepperdine

Malibu, Calif. - In an early season dual match featuring a pair of Top 20 ranked teams, No. 10 California defeated No. 18 Pepperdine by a final score of 5-2 on Thursday afternoon, Jan. 16, at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu.

It was the 2003 season opener for California, while Pepperdine fell to 2-1.

The Bears captured the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, and then proceeded to clinch the contest by winning four of the six singles matches.

Newcomer Or Dekel, in his first collegiate competition, and junior Wayne Wong teamed together to defeat Pepperdine's duo of Doerner/Rafidison, 8-4, while Patrick Briaud and Balazs Veress solidified the doubles point for the Bears with their 8-3 victory. Senior Robert Kowalczyk, Wong, sophomore Mike Ledvonova and freshman Dekel all won their singles matches.

Kowalczyk defeated Scott Doerner, 6-3, 7-5, Wong breezed past Kevin Borzenki, 6-1, 6-1, and Ledvonova dropped Ali Fehmi, 6-0, 6-1. Dekel secured his first intercollegiate victory with his win over Alexis Rafidison, 7-5, 6-2.

The Bears return to action on Friday, Jan. 17 at the Sherwood Country Club Invitational in Sherwood Oaks, CA.
