Jan. 17, 2003

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State got pins from 197-pounder Jason Lovell and heavyweight Andy Bowlby en route to a 35-7 win over Stanford in Pacific-10 wrestling Friday night at Gill Coliseum. OSU 184-pounder Dan Pitsch and 141-pounder Mike Unger Jr. recorded major decisions for the Beavers (6-5 overall, 4-1 Pacific-10).

Oregon State is at home again Saturday afternoon, taking on California-Davis at 2 p.m. in Gill Coliseum in another Pac-10 dual. The Beavers have own six of their last nine dual meets, getting strong performances throughout the lineup more and more consistently.

'You can see them wrestling better,' OSU head coach Joe Wells said. 'They're wrestling to win, to score points, to make a difference. They're working on their conditioning, on pressing the pace. Guys see how it's done and realize they can do it, too. It's an infectious process. Some of those older guys get pins, and it makes a difference.'

A crowd of 782 saw the Beavers' seniors at the two highest weights come up with pins midway through the meet to give OSU a 22-4 lead in the team score. That all but assured Oregon State of improving its all-time dual record against Stanford to 28-0 in a series dating back to 1953.

Lovell gave up a quick takedown to Stanford's Larry Ozawara at 197 pounds and nearly gave up another, then scored a takedown and three-point near-fall before the end of the first period. Ozawara struggled to fight off the pin at the end of both the first and second periods as Lovell built a 12-2 lead; he then opened the third period with a takedown and finally got the Cardinal wrestler's shoulders to the mat in 6 minutes, 2 seconds for his first pin of the season and the third of his career.

Bowlby wrapped up the heavyweight match more quickly. He took down Shawn Ritzenthaler just 15 seconds into the match, scored two- and three-point near-falls and got the pin in 2:46; it was the eighth time this season Bowlby has pinned an opponent in the first period.

It was Bowlby's 10th pin of the season, moving him into a tie for 40th on OSU's all-time list of season leaders; it was the 18th pin of his career, moving him into a tie for 34th on OSU's all-time list. Bowlby has now won eight straight matches, including five by pin, to improve to 18-4 this season.

OSU 174-pounder Jake Huffman also scored an impressive win, his sixth straight victory. He took on Harold Penson, ranked fourth in the Pac-10 at 184 pounds; Huffman was the aggressor throughout a 10-4 decision, scoring two takedowns in the first period and adding one in each of the second and third periods. Huffman has now won 10 of his last 12 matches and is 16-7 this season, giving him a career-high for wins.

Oregon State 165-pounder Matt Ellis also scored his sixth straight victory, as the sophomore took a 7-1 decision over Stanford's Garrett Johnson. Freshman 149-pounder Tony Hook won for the sixth time in his last eight matches, hanging on for a 6-5 win over Stanford's Scott Polley in the night's final match. Another Beaver freshman, Pitsch, won for the ninth time in his last 12 matches as he rolled past Ryan Hagen in a 16-5 major decision at 184 pounds; Pitsch is 15-6 this season.
