Wrestling Pulls Off Sweep With Win Against UC Davis
Jan. 17, 2003
EUGENE - The Oregon wrestling team completed a Pac-10 sweep Friday evening at McArthur Court, knocking off UC Davis, 28-9. The Ducks improved to 4-0 in the Pac-10, while moving their overall record to 5-4.
'Cal Davis is a good team and they wrestled us tough, but our guys did a good job of wrestling with enthusiasm, which is what we've been talking about,' head coach Chuck Kearney said.
Much like the afternoon match against Stanford, the Ducks converted chances in the close matches to pull out the victory. Senior Casey Hunt pinned his opponent at 141 in both matches of the day, while Martin Mitchell pinned his opponent at 125 against UC Davis.
'I just had a little extra spark today,' Hunt said. 'Both matches, everybody just stepped up and wrestled really well.'
Freshman Tony Rolen (184) and sophomore Elias Soto (197) won their matches to remain undefeated on the day. Rolen scored a takedown and near fall in the final seconds of his match to break a tie and win the match.
'I don't have a lot to lose as a freshman stepping in,' Rolen said. 'I just went in with the mindframe of competing. I just went out and wrestled.'
The Ducks next compete at No. 12 Oklahoma and No. 1 Oklahoma State Jan. 24 and 25, respectively.
Branson Phillips and Jeremiah Jarvis squared off at 157 to open the meet, with Jarvis getting the upper hand, 7-2. Jarvis and Phillips were relatively even for most of the match, but Jarvis pulled away in the third period.
At 165, Luke Larwin and Michael Font entered the third period tied at two. Larwin scored an early escape in the third period, then got a takedown in the final seconds to win the match, 5-2, tying the team score at three.
Shane Webster, the No. 8-ranked wrestler at 174, used a late takedown in the third period to defeat Shannan Sams, 3-1. Webster moved his record to 18-2, including 8-1 in dual action.
Freshman Tony Rolen won his second match of the day at 184, defeating Ronnie Silva in one of the better matches of the dual. Rolen and Silva were tied late in the third, when Rolen scored two points for a takedown and two more for a near fall with less than 10 seconds remaining. Silva held a riding time advantage of more than one minute and would have been awarded a riding bonus point, but Rolen's late score prevented Silva from scoring the point.
Sophomore Elias Soto also won his second straight of the day at 197, 12-5, against Michael Clarkston. Just like in his match against Stanford, Soto stayed on the attack the majority of the time to get the victory.
Neil Phillips was unable to hold off Jason Paul of UC Davis at heavyweight, losing the match, 4-0. The low-scoring match featured only one takedown, while Paul scored an extra point for riding advantage.
At 125, Martin Mitchell continued his ability to score pins, winning by fall at the 2:47 mark of the first period against Tommy Schurkamp. Mitchell took Schurkamp down midway through the first period, then slowly executed the pin move. The pin is Mitchell's sixth on the season.
In another close match, UC Davis wrestler Urijah Faber held off a late takedown attempt from Jason Harless to win at 133, 4-3. Harless nearly scored a takedown as time ran out, but was unable to establish control.
Senior Casey Hunt picked up his second pin of the day at 141, this time in the second period against Cris Brines. Hunt took down Brines midway through the second period and had plenty of time to convert the pin. Brines held out as long as possible, but Hunt finished it off at the 4:23 mark.
Tony Overstake finished the night off with a dominating win against Kevin Jones of UC Davis. Overstake controlled the match throughout, winning a major decision, 18-6.
