Jan. 18, 2003
Cal senior goalkeeper Josh Saunders was selected by the San Jose Earthquakes in the fourth round of the 2003 Major League Soccer SuperDraft, held in Kansas City Friday afternoon.
Saunders, the 2002 Pac-10 Player of the Year, was the 36th overall pick in the six-round, 60-person draft. The 6-4 goalie was the Quakes' fourth pick.
During his senior campaign, Saunders helped lead the Golden Bears to a 14-6-2 overall record in 2002, including its first ever postseason victory, reaching the third round of NCAAs. Saunders' career 0.77 GAA is the lowest in the all-time Cal record books, surpassing Todd Harmon's 0.89 GAA (1984-86).
