Berkeley, Calif. - In the second meet of the season, the California women's gymnastics team (3-1, 0-1 Pac-10) brought home a second place finish (192.95) defeating Cal State Fullerton (191.525) and UC Davis (189.675) at the Bruin Classic. The top ranked UCLA squad posted a season high score (198.275) to take top honors at the event. Sophomore My-Lan Dodd led the Bears in the all-around with a 38.550 mark, good for fifth place, while Junior Tri-Captain Stephanie Kim followed in sixth place with a score of 38.325.
The first two rotations proved to be a tight race between California and Cal State Fullerton. After the Bears competed on floor and the Titans on the bars, the teams were tied at 48.025. Despite an impressive performance by Freshman Monique Chang, who received a 9.85 for her efforts on vault, the margin dropped to Cal trailing by .125 after the second rotation.
The Bears pulled ahead in the third rotation on bars with Dodd, Senior Janet McKnight, Junior Karissa Chock, and Freshman Britani Pittullo, placing seventh through tenth, respectively. The final rotation on beam sealed the deal for a solid second place finish with freshman Anja Garcia leading the Bears with a 9.775 performance.
The Bears return to Berkeley next week to host their first home meet versus cross-bay rival Stanford on Friday, Jan. 24, at 7:30 p.m. in Haas Pavilion.
