Top-Ranked Bruins to Host Fresno State

The No. 1-ranked UCLA men's tennis team (1-0) has just one dual match this week, as the Bruins host Fresno State (1-0) at the Los Angeles Tennis Center this Friday beginning at 1:30 p.m. UCLA owns a 20-0 all-time record against Fresno State. Most recently, the Bruins registered a 6-1 decision over the Bulldogs at the LATC last year.
Clemens Goes Back-to-Back at Sherwood . . .
For the second time in as many years, Tobias Clemens claimed the singles title at the Sherwood Collegiate Cup. Clemens, the tournament's No. 1 seed, defeated teammate Marcin Matkowski, 6-2, 6-1 in Monday's final. In 2002, Clemens registered a three-set victory over San Diego State's Oliver Maiberger. Clemens' victory Monday capped off an excellent showing for Bruin players at Sherwood, as four UCLA players reached the semifinals in singles. Seniors Erfan Djahangiri and Rodrigo Grilli made up the other two players to reach the last four. In addition, Bruin freshman Chris Surapol took second place in the round-robin consolation singles draw.
Bruins Roll Over UC Irvine in 2003 Season Opener . . .
UCLA looked strong in its 2003 season opener last week, cruising to a 7-0 decision over UC Irvine on Jan. 15 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins swept all three doubles matches and didn't drop a set in singles action. Bruin senior Rodrigo Grilli teamed with Marcin Matkowski at No. 1 doubles, registering an 8-3 decision over 11th-ranked Jonathan Endrikat/Brian Morton. In singles play, Bruin No. 1 Tobias Clemens turned in an impressive performance as well, recording a 6-1, 6-1 victory Endrikat in the top singles spot.
ITA Picks UCLA Preseason No. 1 . . .
With 29 of 41 first-place votes, the UCLA men's tennis team was picked No. 1 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) in its preseason rankings released on Jan. 13. UCLA, which returns every player from a team that advanced to the NCAA Semifinals in 2002, is joined in the top-5 by Illinois, Baylor Stanford and Florida. Clemens Debuts at No. 12 in Fall Singles Rankings . . .
In addition to the preseason team rankings, fall individual rankings were also released on Jan. 13. Junior Tobias Clemens was ranked No. 12 in the nation followed by No. 38 Erfan Djahangiri and No. 40 Chris Lam. In doubles play, Clemens and senior Lassi Ketola check in at No. 39. Marcin Matkowski, Rodrigo Grilli and Jean-Julien Rojer were not eligible for the rankings due to sitting out fall play.
UCLA Selected to Compete at 2003 USTA/ITA National Team Indoors . . .
UCLA will be one of 16 teams vying for the title at the 2003 USTA/ITA National Team Indoors this February. The tournament will be hosted by the University of Kentucky at the Louisville Tennis Club. The 15 other teams selected to compete this year are: Arkansas, Baylor, California, Duke, Florida, Georgia, Harvard, Illinois, Kentucky, Mississippi, San Diego State, Southern California, Stanford, Texas A&M and Texas.

2003 Schedule . . .
Not counting the USTA/ITA National Team Indoors in February, the Bruins are scheduled to face six teams ranked in the ITA Preseason Top-25. UCLA has regular-season matches against; No. 4 Stanford, No. 7 USC, No. 9 Kentucky, No. 10 Cal, No. 20 Washington and No. 24 Ohio State.
