FRIDAY, JANUARY 24

Oregon State at No. 3 Oklahoma; Norman, Okla.; 10 a.m. PST

SATURDAY, JANUARY 25

Oregon State at No. 1 Oklahoma State; Stillwater, Okla.; 5 p.m. PST

Oregon State makes its last road trip of the regular season, and it's a doozy. The Beavers (7-5 overall, 5-1 Pacific-10) meet No. 3 Oklahoma (9-4, 0-2 Big 12) on Friday afternoon; then they'll step up the rankings to face No. 1 Oklahoma State (10-0, 3-0) on Saturday evening.

Last weekend, Oklahoma State beat Oklahoma 27-6 to win the National Duals championship. It cemented the top spot in the National Wrestling Coaches Association poll for the Cowboys and vaulted the Sooners from 11th to third.

'Oklahoma and Oklahoma State are two of the best teams in the country,' Oregon State head coach Joe Wells said. 'We're excited about getting out and meeting some outstanding competition. We're trying to get better as a team, and this is an outstanding opportunity to go compete against them.'

The last two weeks have seen the Beavers put forth their best, most-consistent efforts of the season. Oregon State has won seven of its last 10 duals; two of those losses came after OSU took nationally-ranked teams to the last match before the meet was decided. Last weekend, the Beavers beat Stanford 35-7 and California-Davis 22-16.

Heavyweight Andy Bowlby is the Beavers' lone nationally-ranked wrestler, tabbed 11th this week by Amateur Wrestling News and ninth by InterMat. He's won his last nine matches, including five by pin, and 13 of his last 14. Bowlby is now 19-4 with 10 pins this season, and eight of those pins have come in the first round.

Bowlby will be tested this weekend, particularly Saturday. Oklahoma State's Willie Gruenwald is ranked 18th by AWN and 16th by IM.

Several other Oregon State wrestlers have been solid in that time, as well.

OSU 174-pounder Jake Huffman has won seven straight matches and 11 of his last 13, including six in which he scored team bonus points for a major decision, technical fall or pin. Huffman is now 17-7 with two pins this season.

Beaver 165-pounder Matt Ellis has won seven straight matches, including four in which he scored team bonus points for a major decision, technical fall or pin; one of the wins was over ninth-ranked Kevin Carr of Central Michigan. Ellis is 11-6 this season.

Oregon State 149-pounder Tony Hook has won seven of his last nine matches, including two over nationally-ranked wrestlers. Hook is 12-6 this season with three pins.

Another Beaver who had been steadily increasing his level of performance will be missed this weekend. OSU 184-pounder Dan Pitsch had won nine of his last 13 matches before having to injury default his match against California-Davis on Saturday; he'll be out for at least this weekend. Pitsch, who had made a brief appearance in the national rankings, is 15-7 this season.

Replacing Pitsch will be Jed Pennell, Anthony Weber or Curt Willener.

For the rest of the Beavers, the duals against the Sooners and Cowboys will be a good test of just how much improvement they've made over the past several weeks - and how much they have left to make before the Pacific-10 Championships and NCAA Championships.

'It's a real wakeup call,' Wells said. 'We'll go out and get after it; we're excited for the opportunity. It's five weeks until the Pac-10 meet and eight weeks until nationals. We can zero in on the things that are working and eliminate the things that aren't working. It's a perfect time for us to hook up with these two teams.'

Oklahoma, which beat West Virginia, Iowa State and Iowa en route to the National Duals final, has six wrestlers in the national rankings. At 125 pounds, Bo Maynes is ranked 11th by AWN and eighth by IM; 133-pounder Witt Durden is ranked fifth by AWN and sixth by IM; 141-pounder Teyon Ware is ranked fourth by AWN and sixth by IM; 174-pounder Robbie Waller is ranked fifth by AWN and third by IM; 184-pounder Josh Lambrecht is ranked third by both AWN and IM; and 197-pounder Tom Grossman is ranked 13th by AWN and 15th by IM.

Oklahoma State, which beat Northern Iowa, Arizona State and Ohio State before topping Oklahoma, has 10 wrestlers in the national rankings. At 125 pounds, Skyler Holman is ranked seventh by AWN and ninth by IM; 133-pounder Johnny Thompson is ranked third by AWN and second by IM; 141-pounder Zack Esposito is ranked first by AWN and third by IM; 149-pounder Jerrod Sanders is ranked fifth by both AWN and IM; 157-pounder Shane Roller is ranked fourth by AWN and fifth by IM; 165-pounder Tyrone Lewis is ranked second by both AWN and IM; 174-pounder Chris Pendleton is ranked second by both AWN and IM; 184-pounder Jake Rosholt is ranked ninth by AWN and 14th by IM; 197-pounder Muhammed Lawal is ranked first by both AWN and IM; and heavyweight Gruenwald is ranked 18th by AWN and 16th by IM.

OREGON STATE ALL-TIME VS. THIS WEEK'S OPPONENTS: Oregon State has an all-time record of 4-11 against Oklahoma in a series dating back to 1967, and the Beavers have lost 7 straight to the Sooners. The last meeting was Oklahoma's 32-11 win in Corvallis in 2001; Oregon State's last win was 20-15 in Corvallis in 1979.

Oregon State has an all-time record of 0-16 against Oklahoma State. Last season, the Cowboys took a 38-3 win in Corvallis.

LAST WEEK: Oregon State capped its homestand with a pair of Pacific-10 victories at Gill Coliseum, beating Stanford 35-7 on Jan. 17 and California-Davis 22-16 on Jan. 18.

Against Stanford, Oregon State got pins from 197-pounder Jason Lovell and heavyweight Andy Bowlby en route to the win over Stanford. OSU 184-pounder Dan Pitsch and 141-pounder Mike Unger Jr. recorded major decisions for the Beavers. A crowd of 782 saw the Beavers' seniors at the two highest weights come up with pins midway through the meet to give OSU a 22-4 lead in the team score. That all but assured Oregon State of improving its all-time dual record against Stanford to 28-0 in a series dating back to 1953. OSU 174-pounder Jake Huffman also scored an impressive win, his sixth straight victory. He took on Harold Penson, ranked fourth in the Pac-10 at 184 pounds; Huffman was the aggressor throughout a 10-4 decision, scoring two takedowns in the first period and adding one in each of the second and third periods.

On Jan. 18, Jason Lovell won the day's final match to preserve Oregon State's 22-16 win over California-Davis. The Beavers needed a win from Lovell to take the dual meet after OSU 184-pounder Dan Pitsch had to injury default his match, suddenly giving the Aggies a chance for the victory. Lovell, OSU's 197-pounder, had been warming up for his match with OSU leading the team score 18-10 when Pitsch was hurt midway through the first period. He was quickly called to the mat, then went out and took an 11-0 major decision over UCD's Michael Clarkston to wrap up the meet. The Beavers also got major decisions from 149-pounder Tony Hook, 165-pounder Matt Ellis and 174-pounder Jake Huffman. Huffman won his seventh straight match to improve to 17-7 this season; Ellis won his seventh straight to improve to 11-6; and Hook won for the seventh time in his last nine matches to improve to 12-6. Perhaps the biggest victory of the afternoon, though, was 141-pounder Matt Unger's 8-1 decision over the Aggies' Cris Brines after UCD won at 125 and 133 pounds to take a 7-3 lead. After scoring an early takedown, Unger had to take 45 seconds of injury time. The Beavers just missed a big upset at 157 pounds, where Brian Duhrkoop had a shot at knocking off Jeremiah Jarvis, ranked No. 1 in the Pac-10. An early takedown and three-point near-fall staked Duhrkoop to a 5-0 lead and he was still up 9-5 going into the third period, but Jarvis rallied in the final period for a wild 17-13 decision. Beaver heavyweight Andy Bowlby opened the meet with a 7-1 decision over UCD's Jason Paul. It was Bowlby's ninth straight win; he's now 19-4 with 10 pins this season.

OREGON STATE HEAD COACH JOE WELLS: Joe Wells, now in his 11th season as Oregon State's head coach, has led the Beavers to a Pacific-10 title and 4 top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships.

The Beavers' 25-10 win over then-No. 11 Boise State in 2001 was Wells' 100th dual meet win at OSU. Since taking over the Beaver program prior to the 1992-93 season, Wells is 122-74-1 for a winning percentage of .622.

The Beavers were Pacific-10 Conference champions under Wells in 1994 and he has twice been named the conference's Coach of the Year. OSU has finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships 4 times in Wells' tenure, placing second in 1995, fourth in 1994, eighth in 1996 and tying for ninth in 1998.

Under Wells, OSU has had 2 national champions, 17 All-Americans and 21 conference champions.

Wells was named the ASICS Oregon Wrestling Classic's Man of the Year for 1998 for his contributions to wrestling in the state.

Wells, who has coached numerous World Teams for the United States, is a 1972 Iowa graduate. He was a 2-time placer at the Big Ten meet and was the 1976 U.S. Wrestling Federation freestyle champ. He spent 17 seasons as an assistant coach at Iowa and Michigan before coming to Oregon State.

OREGON STATE SECOND IN ALL-TIME DUAL MEET WINS: OSU rates as one of the best dual meet teams in collegiate wrestling history. The Beavers were second in all-time dual meet wins among Division I schools and fourth in all-time dual meet winning percentage going into the 2002-03 season. OSU has an all-time dual meet record of 856-266-24 and a .757 winning percentage.

OREGON STATE'S DUAL MEET SCHEDULE: OSU will face one of the nation's toughest dual meet schedules. The Beavers meet 8 teams ranked in the Jan. 22 National Wrestling Coaches Association poll: No. 1 Oklahoma State, No. 3 Oklahoma, No. 9 Arizona State, No. 11 Nebraska, No. 17 Central Michigan, No. 19 Boise State, No. 21 Wisconsin and No. 24 Fresno State.

OREGON STATE IN GILL COLISEUM: Oregon State has one of the finest homes in college wrestling, 10,400-seat Gill Coliseum. Now in their 47th season in Gill Coliseum, the Beavers have a home dual meet record of 354-67-5 in the arena for a winning percentage of .837. This season, OSU is 2-2 at home.

OSU moved its home wrestling meets into Gill Coliseum in 1956-57, when Dale Thomas became head coach. Since then, the arena has hosted conference championship meets 14 times, including 2002, and it was the site of the NCAA Championships in 1961 and 1980.

BOWLBY'S FALLS: Oregon State senior heavyweight Andy Bowlby is climbing OSU's list of all-time leaders for pins in a career and a season. Bowlby has 18 pins in his career and 10 this season.

When Bowlby puts an opponent on his back, the end usually comes quickly. Of Bowlby's 10 pins this season, 8 have come in the first period (and 3 of those in the first minute); of the 18 pins in his career, 14 have come in the first period (and 5 of those in the first minute). The quickest pin of Bowlby's career came against Portland State's Antonio Criado this season in the Jan. 10 Oregon Wrestling Classic Duals; Bowlby recorded the fall in 19 seconds. Here's where Bowlby stands on OSU's single-season and career leader lists through Jan. 18:

BEAVERS SHUT OUT PORTLAND STATE: Oregon State's 46-0 shutout of Portland State at the Oregon Wrestling Classic Duals on Jan. 10 was OSU's first shutout since blanking Central Washington 44-0 early in the 2002 season. The last time Oregon State had shut out an NCAA Division I school was a 45-0 win at Cal State-Fullerton late in the 2001 season. It was both OSU's highest score and the Beavers' largest margin of victory since a 46-0 win over Pacific (Ore.) early in the 1993 season, and OSU's largest margin of victory and highest score against a Division I opponent since beating Oregon 51-0 near the end of the 1984 season.
