Beavers Down Cougars

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) - Philip Ricci scored 17 points and had a career-high15 rebounds as Oregon State pulled away to defeat Washington State 63-48 onThursday.

Jimmie Haywood added 13 points for the Beavers (8-7, 1-5 Pacific-10). It wasthe first Pac-10 win for rookie coach Jay John.

Chris Schlatter and Thomas Kelati led the Cougars (5-11, 0-6) with 12 pointseach.

Washington State led 17-13 with 8:55 left in the first half, but the Beaverswent on a 17-6 run to go into halftime with a 30-23 lead.

The Beavers pulled away in the second half, increasing the lead to 52-37 at7:41. They led by as many as 18 points, but didnt score in the last threeminutes.

The Cougars shot just 30 percent in the first half, and got colder in thesecond half, hitting 24 percent. They were playing their first game withoutMarcus Moore, the Pac-10's second-leading scorer who was lost for the seasonafter opting to have surgery to fix bone spurs on his right ankle.
