No. 3 Cal Wins First Pac-10 Dual Meet at No. 13 Arizona State

TEMPE, Ariz.- - Winning 11 of 16 events, the No. 3 University of California men's swimming team (3-0, 1-0) won its first Pac-10 dual meet of the season, defeating No. 13 Arizona State (1-3, 0-2), 178.5-121.5, in Tempe, Ariz. Friday afternoon.

Seven different Golden Bears won individual events for Cal, with sophomore Caleb Rowe and junior Alex Lim tallying two victories apiece. Rowe won the 100 (55.99) and 200 breast (2:01.97), while Lim placed first in the 100 back (47.14) and 100 fly (48.36).

Cal swept the first three spots in two events, the 100 breast and 200 IM. Rowe won the 100 breast and senior Quentin Byma and freshman Rick Barbosa finished in the second and third places. Sophomore John Dorr won the 200 IM (1:51.65), while Lim finished second and sophomore Jeff Natalizio third.

The Bears' sprinters were impressive, as senior Anthony Ervin won the 50 free (20.16) and sophomore Duje Draganja took the 100 free (44.26). The distance freesylers also swam well, as freshmen Miguel Molina and Ryan Lean won the 500 (4:34.26) and 1000 free (9:22.22), respectively.

On the diving side, senior Nic Bartolotta posted a third-place finish in the one-meter competition (329.43), while junior Robbie Quinn finished third in the three-meter event with a total score of 332.18.

Cal continues Pac-10 competition in the desert, taking on Arizona Sat., Jan. 25 at 1 p.m. The Bears return to action at Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley on Feb. 7 against USC.
