Pennell Moves Up, Gets A Pin
Jan. 24, 2003
HARRAH, Okla. - Oregon State's Jed Pennell, wrestling the first match of his career at 184 pounds, picked up a pin for OSU but the Beavers fell to No. 3 Oklahoma 24-15 in non-league wrestling at Harrah High. OSU (7-6 overall, 5-1 Pacific-10) also got wins from 149-pounder Tony Hook, 165-pounder Matt Ellis and heavyweight Andy Bowlby.
Oregon State completes its final road trip of the regular season with a dual at No. 1 Oklahoma State on Saturday evening. Oklahoma State defeated Oklahoma in the championship match of the National Duals championships last weekend.
Against Oklahoma (10-4, 0-2 Big 12), Pennell stepped into the starting lineup for injured freshman Dan Pitsch. Pennell, a junior, wrestled his first two seasons at 165 pounds before being knocked out of the starting spot by Ellis; he'd never wrestled above 174 pounds in his career. However, against the Sooners' Derrick Brown, he rolled up a 16-4 lead before finally nailing down the pin at the 5:38 mark.
'That's not something you're going to project ahead of time,' OSU head coach Joe Wells said. 'He took the kid down and got him in a cradle right away. Then I don't know if the kid worked so hard to get out of it that he exhausted himself, but he just didn't quite recover. Jed kept scoring and kept the pressure on, and finally got him on his back.'
Ellis won his eighth straight match, a 5-1 decision over OU's Wes Roberts. Ellis, a transfer from Oklahoma State, is 12-6 this season. After a scoreless first period and a Roberts escape to start the second, Ellis scored a takedown for a 2-1 lead. Then the Beaver sophomore scored a reversal to go up 4-1 and eventually added a point for riding time.
'It was back and forth and back and forth on their shots,' Wells said of the 165-pounders. 'Matt was in on him several times but couldn't finish a takedown. Then their kid got in on a shot and Matt countered, went around and scored. He kept building the lead and kept the pressure on him.'
Hook scored a 6-3 decision over Danny Rubenstein, giving the Beaver freshman eight wins in his last 10 matches and bumping his record to 13-6 this season. The score was 2-2 going into the third period, but Hook managed a pair of takedowns sandwiched around a Rubenstein escape for the victory.
'The Oklahoma kid had to try some things to force the issue later on,' Wells said. 'Tony countered him and ended up controlling the pace from there.'
Bowlby, ranked 11th nationally by Amateur Wrestling News, pushed his winning streak to 10 with a 9-4 decision over Joel Tapler. Bowlby, now 20-4 with 10 pins in his senior season, built a 7-1 lead in the first period on two takedowns and a three-point near-fall.
OSU 174-pounder Jake Huffman saw his seven-match win streak end as the Beaver senior was beaten 8-0 by fifth-ranked Robbie Waller of Oklahoma. Huffman is 17-8 this season.
