Jan. 25, 2003
BOULDER, Colo. - The Oregon women's tennis team, ranked No. 34 nationally, bounced back from a disappointing loss to Colorado by defeating No. 45 Illinois Saturday, 4-3. The Ducks fought through the loss of Davina Mendiburu and a flu bug to defeat the Illini.
'It was a good match and these are the matches we need to win,' head coach Nils Schyllander said. 'I think coming back from dealing with the adversity, they did a great job of focusing on the task at hand. I think they played like they had something to prove today.'
Senior captain Monika Gieczys teamed with Julie Merle to defeat the No. 51-ranked doubles team in the nation at No. 2 doubles and freshmen Anna Leksinska and Jamie Marshall won at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point for the Ducks.
Oregon won the top three singles spots to score the four points necessary for team victory. No. 28-ranked Panova won easily against the No. 41-ranked player in the nation, 7-5, 6-1. Nagle had to go to three sets to win at No. 2 singles, while Gieczys was forced to do the same at the No. 3 spot.
'Monika showed why she was our team captain today,' Schyllander said.
