Men's Tennis Falls to New Mexico, 5-2

Jan. 26, 2003

EUGENE - The Oregon men's tennis team, ranked No. 73 nationally, lost to the New Mexico Lobos, 5-2, Sunday afternoon at the Student Tennis Center. The Ducks (1-1) could not recover from losing the doubles point and won only two singles matches on the day.

In doubles play, Sven Swinnen and Oded Teig defeated No. 59 Brent Salazar and Ryan Stotland at the No. 1 spot, 8-4. Unfortunately, the Ducks could not win at the other two spots despite playing tight in both matches. The Lobos took a 1-0 lead into the singles action.

New Mexico won the first four singles matches to come off the court to clinch the victory. All four matches ended within five minutes of each other, and the Ducks did not pick up their final two victories until the team match was decided. Freshmen Thomas Bieri (3) and Arron Spencer (5) each won in three sets to score the Ducks only points.
