No. 6 Women's Tennis Sweeps Opening Weekend With Back to Back Wins in Virginia

WILLIAMSBURG, VA (January 26, 2003)-The No. 6 ranked Arizona State Sun Devils gave the William and Mary's 16th-ranked women's tennis team their first loss of the season today, with a sound victory of 6-1 at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.

The Sun Devils improve to a flawless 2-0.

The two teams split the first two doubles matches, with ASUwinning at No. 1 and the Tribe duo of Kari Olsen (San Diego, CA) andLingda Yang (Coconut Creek, FL) winning, 8-5, at No. 3.

With the match on court two left to decide who would win the team point, ASU's37th-ranked Mhairi Brown and Cindy Sureephong stepped up to defeat Megan Muth ans Amy Wei 7-2 to capture the doubles point.

Things started hot for the Sun Devils in singles, as the team won the first set in all six matches.

The Sun Devils faltered only once with Joslynn Burkett just barely falling to Lena Sherbakov 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 in a tough match.

The Sun Devils were flawless in the rest of the day's match, sweeping the rest of the singles matches and taking home a 6-1 victory.

The Sun Devils return to action February 7th versus Northern Arizona in Tempe, AZ starting at 1:30pm at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
