Cal Softball Tabbed No. 3 in Preseason Poll

Berkeley, Calif. - Berkeley, Calif. - After being crowned the 2002 National Champions, California is ranked No. 3 in the USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association preseason Top 25 poll. Seven Pac-10 teams are ranked in the Top 25, including No. 1 UCLA.

Finishing the season ranked No. 1 by the NFCA with an overall record of 56-19 (12-9 Pac-10), the Golden Bears are expected to have another stellar season in 2003.

Cal returns seven starters from last year's squad, including seniors Courtney Scott and Veronica Nelson.

Looking to continue its 11-game winning streak, the Bears kick off the season hosting San Jose State and Tennessee Friday, Jan. 31 and Saturday, Feb. 1 in a two-day round robin tournament at Levine-Fricke Field. On Friday, Cal faces San Jose State at 11:30 a.m. and Tennessee at 2 p.m.. Play continues Saturday for the Bears at 11:30 and 2 p.m., when they face the Lady Vols and the Spartans, respectively. The visiting teams will match-up for the early bird games both days at 9 a.m.
