Men's Tennis Hits the Road
Jan. 31, 2003
EUGENE - The Oregon men's tennis team, ranked No. 75 nationally, hits the road for two tennis matches in as many days against No. 72 BYU and New Mexico State. The Ducks (1-1) will play the Cougars Saturday in Provo, Utah, and then will play Sunday against the Aggies, also in Utah.
The two matches will be the first for the Ducks on the road. Oregon split its first two dual matches of the season, sweeping Idaho, 7-0, and losing to No. 59 New Mexico, 5-2.
Sven Swinnen and Oded Teig will face the No. 7-ranked doubles team in the country, Carlos Lozano and Erik Nyman of BYU. Swinnen and Teig won both of their matches this past weekend, including a win against the No. 59 tandem of Brent Salazar and Ryan Stotland of New Mexico. Swinnen and Teig also defeated the No. 2-ranked doubles team earlier this season.
Sophomore Manuel Kost, ranked No. 64 nationally, was a bystander for the Ducks' first two matches. Kost was resting an abdominal injury during the two matches and has yet to play a match in this calendar year. Kost is expected to play in both matches this weekend.
Freshmen Thomas Bieri and Arron Spencer had solid debuts this past weekend, winning both of their singles matches. Both players had to work three sets to win against New Mexico after winning in straight sets against Idaho.
Oregon will return home to face the Portland Pilots Feb. 8 at the Student Tennis Center.
