No. 23 Softball Tops BYU, 5-3, In Season Opener
Jan. 31, 2003
ST. GEORGE, Utah - Freshman Vanessa Iapala's first inning grand slam home run helped lead the No. 23 ranked Oregon State softball team to a 5-3 victory against Brigham Young University in the opening contest of the Southern Utah Tournament. The game was the season opener for both squads.
'I was pleased with our intensity and our focus and our preparation,' said OSU head coach Walker. 'We really came out on fire and that was nice to see.'
OSU got on top early with Clare Burnum leading off the bottom of the first with a single. Kelly Petersen sacrificed Burnum to second, and Brynnen Guthrie popped out, bringing Shelly Prochaska to the plate with two down. Prochaska, who ranks third on the Beavers' all-time bases on balls list, drew a walk and Steph Adams was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Iapala stepped to the plate for her first collegiate at-bat and blasted a 3-1 pitch over the left-center field fence to give OSU a 4-0 lead.
'It was very exciting for Vanessa to have a grand slam in her first career at-bat with the Beavers,' said OSU head coach Kirk Walker.
Oregon State added another run in the second when Burnum hit a shot over the left field wall. The home run was the fourth of her career.
BYU got on the board in the fourth inning when freshman Ianeta Lei belted a two-run homer over the center field fence. The Cougars added another run in the sixth when Arron Layns' single knocked in Brooke Cadiente, but Beaver hurler Monica Hoffman squelched the BYU rally by striking out a pair of batters to end the inning.
Hoffman (1-0) allowed seven hits while striking out six batters in seven innings of work.
'Monica had a good outing for throwing seven innings,' said Walker. 'She gave up a couple of big hits, but came up with some big strikeouts and outs at critical points.'
Burnum finished 2-for-3 on the day with two runs scored, while Petersen was a perfect 2-for-2 from the plate with a stolen base and sacrifice. Freshman Lisa Allen earned a hit in her first career at-bat after entering the game as a pinch-hitter in the sixth. Iapala finished 1-for-2 from the plate with four RBI.
'It was definitely a good outing overall and very positive to get our first win,' said Walker.
OSU returns to tourney action on Saturday when it faces host Southern Utah University at 11:30 a.m. PST. The Beavers will meet Saint Mary's College at 1:30 PST.
