No. 7 UCLA Falls to No. 9 USC, 4-3

LOS ANGELES - Despite winning two late matches in tiebreakers, the No. 7 UCLA Women's Tennis team fell to crosstown-rival No. 9 USC, 4-3. Sara Walker, Laura Gordon, and Sarah Gregg were winners for UCLA on the singles side, while Anya Loncaric and Jackie Carleton teamed for UCLA's doubles win. USC took the doubles point 2-1.
Walker, the sixth-ranked player in the nation, knocked off Jewel Peterson, No. 3 in the country, 6-2, 6-7(4), (10-7). On court four, Gregg also came from behind to beat 103rd-ranked Anita Loyola 5-7, 6-2, (10-2). The third set of both matches was played in a tiebreak format, with the winner being the first player to ten points.
Gordon continued her winning ways, defeating 90th-ranked Tiffany Brymer 7-6(7), 6-1. In the other singles matches, Carleton fell to USC's Luana Magnani 6-0, 6-3, while 55th-ranked Maureen Diaz defeated UCLA's Susi Wild 6-2, 6-2, and Carine Vermeulen beat UCLA's Loncaric 6-3, 6-4.
In the other two doubles matches, USC's Brymer and Peterson beat UCLA's Gordon and Walker 8-6, while Gregg and Wild fell to USC's Loyola and Magnani 8-4.
The Bruins will pick up their rackets next on Thursday, Feb. 6 in Madison, WI, for the USTA/ITA National Indoor Team Championships. Sixteen teams will compete, and the draw will be announced later next week. UCLA returns to dual-match play the following weekend on Friday, Feb. 14 at Pepperdine, with its next home match on Feb. 18 versus Fresno State.
