No. 10 Bears Complete Weekend Sweep, Drop No. 28 San Diego State, 6-1
Feb. 1, 2003
San Diego, Calif. - The No. 10 California women's tennis (2-0) team started the 2003 season in style, completing a weekend sweep in San Diego with its 6-1 victory over No. 28 San Diego State (1-1) Saturday afternoon at the San Diego State tennis courts. The Golden Bears won all three doubles matches and claimed five of the six singles matches en route to the victory.
California set the tone early, sweeping the doubles matches to earn the quick 1-0 lead. The Cal tandem of Jieun Jacobs and Jody Scheldt was the first to finish, claiming an 8-4 victory over the Aztecs' Patricia Graf and Lindsey Hedberg. The Bears only nationally ranked doubles pair, No. 4 Raquel Kops-Jones and Christina Fusano took the next win, 8-4, over San Diego State's Silvia Tornier and Patricia Graf to effectively earn the doubles point for Cal. But the Bears' Nicole Havlicek and Caroline Tudemand had some unfinished business to take care of, edging Katalina Romero and Katja Karrento in a 9-8 thriller to complete the doubles sweep.
After dropping the doubles point, San Diego State tied the match at 1-1 when the Aztecs' Patricia Graf recorded the victory as Cal newcomer Caroline Tudemand retired in the second set. The brief tie was as close as the match would get as the Bears won the next five singles matches, the first four in straight sets. Cal clinched the victory when No. 54 Jieun Jacobs defeated Katja Korrento, 6-2, 6-3, on court No. 3 to give the Bears a 4-1 lead with only two matches left to play.
The most thrilling match of the afternoon belonged to a pair of ranked opponents, Cal's No. 12 Kops-Jones and San Diego State's No. 66 Silvia Tornier. Kops-Jones got blanked in the first set, 0-6, before rebounding to take the final two sets in a narrow 0-6, 7-6, 6-4 victory.
In an exhibition match, Cal redshirt freshman Brooke Borisoff breezed past the Aztecs' Sarah Sansom in a straight set victory, 6-3, 6-0.
Cal returns to action next week, Feb. 6-9, as the squad travels to Madison, Wisconsin to take part in the National Team Indoor Championships.
