Ricci Leads Beavers Past Bruins

LOS ANGELES - Philip Ricci scored a career-high 26 points and grabbed14 rebounds in a dominating inside performance and Oregon State defeated UCLA83-79 Saturday night, sending the Bruins to their eighth consecutive loss,their worst skid since the 1940s.
UCLA (4-13, 2-7 Pac-10) also extended its record for losses at PauleyPavilion in a season to nine. The Bruins are mired in ninth place in theconference and only the top eight teams qualify for the Pac-10 tournament,which is their only chance at postseason play.
The Bruins haven't been this bad since losing 10 straight during the 1940-41season under Wilbur Johns.
The Beavers (11-7, 4-5) snapped a 14-game losing streak at Pauley, wherethey last won on Jan. 7, 1999. They had lost seven straight overall to theBruins.
Oregon State owns a four-game winning streak in the Pac-10 for the firsttime since the 1992-93 team opened the season with five straight wins.
Brian Jackson scored 16 of his 18 points in the first half for the Beavers,who controlled the boards 39-31 and repeatedly burned the Bruins with second-and third-chance baskets.
The Bruins rallied from 12 points down with 5:08 remaining to get to 77-75on a 3-pointer by Jason Kapono, who controlled a shaky pass from T.J. Cummingsthat bounced off Kapono's knee.
Jimmie Haywood, who added 14 points, hit a 3-pointer to give Oregon State an80-75 lead.
UCLA's Ray Young stole the ball, tripped Brian Jackson and scored to get to80-77. Young was fouled, but missed the free throw.
Pressured by the shot clock, Haywood tossed up a short ball, but DijonThompson wasted UCLA's possession by traveling. Lamar Hurd got fouled and madeboth to keep Oregon State ahead 82-77.
Cummings tipped in a missed 3-pointer by Kapono and the Bruins trailed 82-79with 5 seconds left. The Bruins were forced to foul Haywood, who made one oftwo free throws for an 83-79 lead. Cedric Bozeman missed a 3-pointer from theright side and the Beavers grabbed the rebound as time expired.
Kapono led UCLA with 18 points, Thompson added 16 points and Cummings andRay Young had 11 points each.
The Bruins scored the first five points of the second half for a 48-41 lead.Oregon State outscored them 21-4, including 13 by Ricci, to take a 62-52 leadwith 10:34 remaining.
UCLA ran off seven straight on two free throws each by Ryan Hollins andJason Kapono and a 3-pointer by Jon Crispin to close its deficit to threepoints.
But Haywood got hot, hitting two 3-pointers and scoring two other baskets togive the Beavers their largest lead of the second half 76-64.
The Beavers ran off 10 unanswered points to take a 39-32 lead before UCLAscored nine in a row for a 41-39 lead. The teams traded baskets and Bozemanscored inside to put UCLA ahead 43-41 at halftime.
