Feb. 6, 2003
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Amit Tamir scored 27 points, including 7-of-11 on 3-pointers, as California defeated Oregon State 84-71 Thursday.
Joe Shipp added 18 points -- 12 in the second half -- and nine rebounds for the Golden Bears (15-4, 8-2).
Oregon State (11-8, 4-6) was led by Philip Ricci's 16 points and six rebounds and Jimmie Haywood's 13 points. The loss snapped the Beavers' four game conference winning streak.
Cal jumped out to an early 14-3 lead. But Oregon State got as close as 34-28 before Cal took a 38-30 advantage into halftime. Tamir was 6-of-7 on 3-pointers and had 20 points in the first half.
Brian Wethers hit three quick baskets and Shipp added two in a row and the Golden Bears led 50-32 at 16:18. Cal led briefly by 20, making it 74-54 on a putback by Gabriel Hughes. The Beavers cut the lead to 81-69 at 1:00.
Wethers scored 13 of his 15 points after intermission, while adding five rebounds and a career-high-tying six assists.
Cal ended a two-game losing streak, losing at Arizona and Arizona State last weekend. The Golden Bears have won eight straight over the Beavers in Corvallis.
Tamir's seven three-pointes tied the Gill Coliseum first set by Oregon State's Gary Payton. Only Shipp, with nine three-pointers vs. Fresno State last year, is the only Cal player to ever have more treys in a game.
