No. 23 Oregon State Softball Downs Iowa State 10-2
Feb. 7, 2003
TEMPE, ARIZ. - No. 23 ranked Oregon State softball (5-0) grabbed its fifth win of the season, riding two three-run home runs by senior Cara Maxey to a 10-2 victory over Iowa State at the ASU Fiesta Bowl Tournament.
Maxey's two home runs ties an OSU record for home runs in a single game and marks her third home run of the season. Maxey also recorded six RBI, one shy of tying the OSU record for RBI in a single game.
'Cara had a career day today,' head coach Kirk Walker said. 'What she did today was very impressive.'
Oregon State was slow off the bat before getting on the board in the third inning with two runs. With the game tied at 2-2 going into the bottom of the fourth, senior Brynnen Guthrie connected for a double and scored the winning run moments later on a single by senior Shelly Prochaska. Prochaska came up big for the Beavers on the day, also smacking her first home run of the season.
'Shelly came up with a big hit for us,' Walker said. 'It was really great to see her swing the bat aggressively like she was today.'
The Beaver's defense also did its job allowing just two runs, both in the third inning, one of which came off of a single shot home run by senior Erica Martinez.
'Iowa State is a good hitting team, but we did a nice job of keeping the offense down,' Walker said. 'This is definitely a good win over a pretty strong team from the region.'
Junior Monica Hoffman continued her dominance on the mound allowing just two runs and four hits on the day, improving her record to a perfect 5-0 on the season.
'Our freshman just continue to play solid for us and hit the ball extremely well,' Walker said.
The Beavers (5-0) will look for their sixth win of the season when they face Texas Tech (2-3) at 4:30 p.m. Friday afternoon.
