No. 23 Softball Ties Best Start Ever With 2-1 Win Over Texas Tech
Feb. 7, 2003
TEMPE, ARIZ. - The No. 23 Oregon State softball team pulled out its sixth win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Texas Tech (2-4) at the Fiesta Bowl Tournament, giving them a tie for the best start in Beaver softball history with a 6-0 record.
The game went down to the wire as the Beavers recorded three consecutive hits by Clare Burnum, Kelly Petersen and Brynnen Guthrie in the bottom of the seventh to break the 1-1 tie. With runners on first and second Guthrie stepped up to the plate and delivered, bringing Burnum home for the game winning run.
'The way we pulled this game out was a great show of character and heart,' head coach Kirk Walker said. ' It was nice to see Burnum, Petersen and Guthrie step up and lead the team to victory.'
Junior Monica Hoffman and freshman Amy Klever shared the pitching duties for the game, combining to hold Texas Tech to just four hits on the day. Hoffman started the Beavers off and was relieved in the fourth by Klever before returning in the fifth to close out the game and record her sixth win in as many games. Hoffman finished the game with seven strikeouts and allowed three hits in five and a half innings of work.
'Monica did great and threw very well,' Walker said. 'Amy did great job in her one and a half innings as well.'
Despite not putting points on the board the Beavers had 10 hits on the day with seven Beavers contributing.
Brynnen Guthrie was a perfect 3-for-3 with the game winning RBI. Kelly Petersen recorded two hits and freshman Vanessa Iapala recorded a double in the third, making her the only Beaver to tally an extra base hit in the game.
'It's nice to come out with our second win of the day, but offensively we were a little bit loose and not as focused as we have been,' Walker said. 'Hopefully we can make some small adjustments going into tomorrows games.'
The Beavers defeated Iowa State in their first game of the day and will continue action at the Fiesta Bowl on Saturday when they face UNLV at 10 a.m. and Utah at 12:30 p.m.
