Cal Wins Five Events at Wolfpack Invitational

Reno, Nev.- - The University of California men's and women's indoor track and field teams won five events at the Wolfpack Invitational Saturday in Reno, Nevada. The University of Nevada hosted the meet that featured both collegiate and club teams including several Northern California schools such as, San Francisco State, Cal State Sacramento, UC Davis and Fresno State.
The women's team won three events, while the men's squad captured two event victories. Individual winners on the women's side included freshman Osarhiemen Omwanghe victory in the 55m hurdles (7.99). She also placed second in the 55m dash (7.12). Redshirt freshman Elzunia Lamb won the long jump with a season-best mark of 19-2.75. For the men, freshman Teak Wilburn won the high jump with a season-best and NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 7-1.00. Sophomore David Glasgow turned in a runner-up performance in the high jump, finishing second with a season-best mark of 6-9.00.
Both the men's and women's 4x400 relay teams were victorious. The men's team won the race in 3:23.56, while the women finished first with a time of 3:52.02. The women's 'B' team placed fourth in 4:04.84.
Other top five performances for the Bears included senior Ahmad Wright's duo of runner-up finishes in both the 55m (6.43) and 400m (48.67). Sophomore Randy Fair and junior Tim Bogdanof notched third-place finishes in the 800m (1:56.20) and 55m hurdles (7.60), respectively. Junior triple jumper Bruce Giron was runner-up in the event with a leap of 46-2.75. Redshirt freshman Rhuben Williams took third in the shot put (56-7.25), while juniors Jason Gatewood and Jeremiah Tolbert both finished fifth in the long jump (21-8.75). Gatewood also garnered a fifth-place finish in the high jump (6-7.00).
Impressive performances on the women's side included sophomore Shannan Hawes' third-place finish in the 200m (25.44) and senior Lache Bailey's third-place showing in the 800m (2:14.58). Senior pole vaulter Leora Ward placed third in the event with a season-best vault of 12-1.50. Freshman Mary Meyman turned in a third-place finish in the 55mH (8.22), while junior Stephanie Cowling finished right behind her in fourth (8.25). Cowling also placed fourth in the 200m (25.50). Senior DeCola Groce came in fourth in the 55m (7.17). In the field events, junior transfer Brooke Meredith placed fifth in the long jump (17-9.00). Senior Sheni Russell and junior Jenna Johnson both notched season-best marks in the shot put, as Russell took fourth (47-3.00) and Johnson finished fifth (46-7.25). Sophomore Tamrya d'Artenay finished fourth in the weight throw (53-1.75).
Cal has now concluded its regular indoor track and field season. Next up for the Bears is the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships, Feb. 21-22, in Boise, Idaho. Cal's first home meet is the Blue & Gold Intrasquad Meet, March 1, at Edwards Stadium.
