No. 23 Oregon State Off To Best Start Ever With Wins Over UNLV And Utah
Feb. 8, 2003
TEMPE, ARIZ. - The No. 23 Oregon State softball team continued to roll on Saturday, nailing down its seventh and eighth wins of the season, giving themselves sole possession of the best start in OSU history at 8-0.
After two days of action the Beavers are a perfect 4-0 at the Fiesta Bowl Tournament. They opened up the day with a 9-2 pummeling of UNLV (2-5) in six and a half innings, and later went on to edge Utah 1-0 in seven innings to close out the day.
Shelly Prochaska blasted two home runs and batted in four RBI against UNLV, becoming just the third player in OSU history to hit two home runs in a single game. Prochaska is the only player in OSU history to have a perfect 4-for-4 performance their career.
Prochaska wasn't the only Beaver to have a great day at the plate as the Beavers recorded 13 hits in the game. Brynnen Guthrie went 3-for-5 with three runs-scored, one RBI and a home run. Adrienne Alo also got into the action finishing the game with a home run and a RBI.
'Offensively we did a great job of putting on the pressure and getting runs scored,' Walker said.
Freshman Amy Klever hurled six strikeouts and was credited with the record setting seventh win, throwing the first five innings before Monica Hoffman came in to close for the Beavers. The win was the first of Klever's collegiate career.
'This is a great win for Amy in her first start,' Walker said. 'She did a great job and threw for five solid innings.'
Adrienne Alo's solo bomb over the right centerfield fence in the bottom of the fourth, combined with Monica Hoffman allowing just one hit in seven innings of work was exactly what the Beavers needed to come out on top in a hard fought battle against Utah. OSU senior Steph Adams had a double and was the only player on either team to record an extra base hit.
The win was Hoffman's seventh of the season and the 34th of her career. She is now sixth all-time in career wins at OSU with 36.
The Beavers will look for the sweep on Sunday when they face Wisconsin at 7 a.m. and SW Texas State at 9 a.m. in the final day of action.
'These are two big wins over two teams in our region that we won't see later in the season,' Walker said.
