Pietsch's Power, Sanders' Save

Feb. 8, 2003

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Oregon State turned the tables on California-Riverside on Saturday, using an awesome display of power to come from behind and down the Highlanders 8-6 at the Riverside Sports Complex for the Beavers' first baseball victory of the season. Seth Pietsch had a home run, triple and single and three runs batted in to help hand UCR its first loss of the season, and Jared Sanders pitched the final 1 1/3 innings to tie OSU's career saves record.

OSU (1-1 overall) and California-Riverside (5-1) will finish their series on Sunday at 1 p.m.

'It's always great to get the first win,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'We talked about winning on the road against good clubs early, and that's hard to do. Our guys came out and did a lot of things right. We made some early mistakes when we probably could have put some more runs on the board.'

On Saturday, OSU starter Ben Rowe was touched for two runs in the first inning on three hits, including run-scoring doubles by Tony Festa and Randy Blood. Rowe settled down and didn't give up another hit until the sixth inning, picking up the victory. Rowe was 7-5 as a sophomore last season.

The Beavers got on the board in the top of the second as Pietsch, who struggled at the plate Friday, followed Chris Biles' leadoff flyout with a booming home run over the 400-foot centerfield fence off starter Dan Ellis. The homer - the first of the season for OSU - was the 11th round-tripper of Pietsch's career.

The Beavers broke the game open in the fourth inning with five consecutive hits, all thundering shots, to knock Ellis out of the game. Andy Jarvis got things started with a line drive up the middle. Pietsch followed with a long triple off the centerfield wall to drive home Jarvis. Jacoby Ellsbury followed with a screaming line drive single to right. Tony Calderon then singled to center, moving Ellsbury up a base. Paul Richie moved both runners up on a sacrifice, and that was the end of Ellis.

The Highlanders brought Julio Fernandez in from the pen and he was greeted by a well-executed bunt single by Chris Kunda to score Ellsbury. Fernandez was called for a balk, allowing Richie to score. Kunda was then picked off second base for the second out and probably stopped more damage, as OSU followed with a walk to Rob Recuenco and Kerisi Reynolds being hit by a pitch to load the bases once again. Jarvis, who had started the inning, then struck out to end the frame.

Rowe, who looked very sharp, was the victim of some poor defense to start the four-run UCR sixth inning. Ryan Harvey, the Highlanders' leading hitter, opened the sixth with a ground ball that was misplayed by Kunda, but a friendly home scoring decision gave Harvey a hit. Festa followed with a line-drive single to right that Reynolds let get through him for an error, allowing Harvey to score.

OSU brought in lefthander Noel Clark to pitch at that point, and he needed help from righthander Andy Baldwin before the Beavers got out of the inning with a 7-6 lead. The Beavers added an insurance run in the seventh as Pietsch singled with one out; the junior leftfielder finished the day only a double short of hitting for the cycle. Calderon walked and Richie rifled a single up the middle to plate Pietsch.

OSU had some anxious moments down the stretch but closer Jared Sanders came in with one out in the eighth to get the final four outs. In the ninth, he hit Harvey with a pitch on a two-strike count to open the inning. However, Festa - who had two hits in the game - hit a shot in the hole at shortstop that Recuenco turned into a sensational double play to take the wind out of the rally. Sanders got cleanup hitter Jeff Crinklaw to ground out to end the game.

Sanders' save was the 10th of his career, matching the mark set by Mike Boire from 1996-98. The junior set OSU's single-season save record last season with nine.

'The important thing is that Sanders came in and shut the door in the ninth inning,' Casey said. 'We had a big double play in the ninth. I thought Baldwin gave us some good innings in the middle and Ben Rowe was very good. Pietsch responded with some outstanding hitting today and they threw some good arms at us. Now we need to come out and get Sunday's game.'

OSU centerfielder Aaron Mathews' hitting streak remained at 14 games. In the first inning, the sophomore was hit on the right wrist by a pitch and had to come out of the game. Ellsbury moved from rightfielder to centerfielder at that point and made five catches; three of them came at the end of long runs.
