Softball Rolls Past Florida A&M, Wins Seminole Classic
Feb. 8, 2003
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The University of Oregon softball team defeated Florida A&M University 11-4 Saturday afternoon to finish 4-0 at the Seminole Classic in Tallahasse, Fla., and capture its second tournament title in as many weeks. With the win, the Ducks are 8-1 overall, while the Rattlerettes fall to 2-4 on the season.
'We have a very resilient team right now,' Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. 'We're getting hits when we need to and right now we're just outplaying teams. I'm very pleased with our pitching and how we've been playing defensively. The biggest thing about tonight's game is that we got to play a lot of different players and everybody contributed.'
Oregon scored a run on an RBI double by Jenn Poore in the first inning and then scored six runs on three hits in the bottom of the second inning to take a 7-0 lead. Eight different Oregon players had a hit in the game, including junior Jenn Poore (San Diego, Calif.), who was 2-for-2 with two RBI. Four different players had a double, including pitcher Lindsay Kontra and first baseman Mari Lyn Petrick, who was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Florida A&M got on the board in the top of the third inning on a two-RBI triple by Teresa Scott and scored a run each in the fifth and six innings, but was never able to break through offensively.
Oregon's freshman came up big in the bottom of the third inning with catcher Heather Munson and center fielder Danielle Baird each recording their first hit of the season. Shortstop Breanne Sabol, who is making a name for herself as a defensive player for the Ducks, drove in Baird with a double to left center and Munson got her first RBI of the season, scoring Sabol on her hit. Baird had her best offensive performance, finishing the game 2-for-3.
The Ducks had 10 or more hits for the second consecutive game and defensively Kontra allowed four runs (two earned) in seven innings pitched and improved to 3-0 on the season.
