Bears (7-2) Rewrite Record Book in Quad Meet Victory
Feb. 9, 2003
Berkeley, Calif. - The California women's gymnastics team (7-2) posted an all-time Cal record score in the team competition to defeat Cal State Fullerton, Boise State and UC Davis this afternoon, Feb. 9, at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley. The Bears' mark of 196.375 shattered the previous all-time score of 196.075 set against Stanford nearly two years ago, Feb. 18, 2001.
Cal's 7-2 record to begin the 2003 season is also quite an accomplishment, equaling the 1996 squad's 7-2 start.
The Bears got off to a quick start on the vault, tying a season-high mark score of 48.675. Senior tri-captain Janet McKnight took first place with a 9.85 and freshman Monique Chang finished second with her 9.825. Junior tri-captain Stephanie Kim established a personal best score as Cal led all teams after the first rotation.
The second rotation brought the Bears to the bars, completing yet another performance for the record books. Not only was the final mark of 49.250 a season high, but also places this 2003 squad third place all-time on the bars. Sophomore My-Lan Dodd was nothing short of spectacular, completing a 9.925 for first place and also setting a new career high. Chang finished second with a stellar 9.900 for her career high and Karissa Chock (9.850), Miho Maeda (9.800) and Britani Pittullo (9.775) set season highs. After two rotations Cal's 97.925 started to set the team apart from the rest of the pack, as Cal State Fullerton was the next closest with their 97.075.
Up next: the beam. Once again the 2003 Bears made their mark in history, this time tallying a 49.175 on the beam to set a new all-time California record. The beam rotation effectively separated the Bears from the rest of the competition with only one rotation left to come. Dodd took first place (9.900) tying her career-high, but Maeda (3rd place) and Chock (T-5th place) both set career high marks on this day of exceptional gymnastics.
The last rotation, the floor exercise, was one of the finest overall team performances of the afternoon, with three Cal gymnasts recording 9.9s and the Bears taking the top four spots in the event. Chang (1st) and Kim (3rd) posted 9.9s - good for career highs - while Dodd and Pittullo's (2nd & 4th) scores tied personal bests. Again Maeda set another career mark - her second of the day - with her floor routine.
My-Lan Dodd's 39.425 performance this afternoon crushed her personal best score of 39.125 and at the same time established a new California record in the individual all-around competition, beating her previous No. 1 score of 39.325 (NCAA Regionals - 4/6/02). Freshman Britani Pittullo had an equally impressive all-around finish, taking second place with a 39.050 - also beating her career best mark.
Cal hits the mats next on Friday, Feb. 14 at 7:00 p.m. as the squad travels to Oregon State to take on the ninth-ranked Beavers.
